Oberlin Volleyball Team Travels to Hiram for Three Matches

September 16, 2006 -- Oberlin's volleyball squad completed a busy week of competition by voyaging to Hiram College this afternoon for three matches. The Yeowomen battled strongly in all three matches, but were defeated by Hiram College, Thomas More College, and St. Vincent College.

The Yeowomen opened up play today against North Coast Athletic Conference power Hiram College. The Terriers defeated Oberlin in three straight games, 30-11, 30-18, and 30-16. Oberlin started off well against Thomas More, winning the first game by the score of 30-26; however, the Yeowomen lost the next two games 22-30 and 16-30, and dropped the final game in a nail-biter, 29-31. St. Vincent, another strong squad, earned victories of 30-17, 30-16, and 30-20 over the Yeowomen.

"Today was fast-paced, hard-hitting volleyball and we competed well," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "We minimized errors on our side and played our game forcing the other teams to play and earn their points."

Added Cavanaugh, "Even though the scores don't reflect it, we raised the bar for Oberlin volleyball today. Tammela kept us in the games by coming up with phenomenal digs all day, while Deysi stood out as well playing multiple roles."

Oberlin will be anxious to get back on the winning side of the line score when it hosts Lake Erie College on Sept. 19 at 7:00 p.m.
