Au, a senior from San Francisco, California, finished out the season with 357 digs. The honor marks the libero's first selection to the All-Conference squad.
---The Yeowomen wrapped up their 2005 season in a 3-0 loss to Notre Dame.
The Falcons defeated Oberlin 30-13, 30-22 and 30-22. Senior libero Katie Au had another stellar night as she tallied 11 digs. Sophomore Deysi Villarreal racked up 14 assists, while first-year Elizabeth Segroves had two solo blocks.
"Katie played another solid game," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "She played very well tonight and was just a standout player. "
---The Oberlin College volleyball team put up a valiant effort, but they could not stop Wittenberg University as they fell three games to none at home.
Wittenberg defeated the Yeowomen 30-20, 30-16 and 30-13. This was the final game for three Oberlin seniors, Katie Au, Jeanne Feuerstein and Shoshannah Bramlett. Au had 20 digs on the night, while Feuerstein had seven kills.
"Katie Au kept us in the match, she dug everything," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "We need to have more consistency in our play. We had some rough spots tonight, but we also had some really good spots."
The Yeowomen now stand 3-19 on the season, and 0-7 in the NCAC. The team will play their final game tomorrow as they travel to Euclid, Ohio to take on Notre Dame College.
--- Oberlin College was defeated by Hiram College in three games on Tuesday. The Terriers defeated the Yeowomen 30-13, 30-11 and 30-13.
"We really stressed blocking Hiram this week in practice," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "I'm glad to see our efforts pay off in that regard."
Despite the loss, the bright spot for Oberlin was that their preparation in practice showed as they held senior Shana Toth, ranked fifth in the conference in kills, to only six on the night. The Yeowomen are 3-18 on the season, and 0-6 in the NCAC. The team will play their final NCAC match next Tuesday as they host Wittenberg University.
--- Oberlin College surged to 27 points in the final game of Saturday's match with The College of Wooster but could not avoid a sweep at the hands of the Scots. Wooster won game one 30-23, game two 30-13, and game three 30-27.
Sophomore Deysi Villarreal put together a valiant effort in defeat, notching 16 assists, 10 kills, and 10 digs. First-year Elizabeth Seagroves served a pair of aces for Oberlin.
The loss drops the Yeowomen to 3-18 overall, 0-6 in the NCAC. Oberlin travels to Hiram on Tuesday for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Terriers.
--- Ohio Wesleyan University got the best of the Oberlin College volleyball team Wednesday evening, but not before the Yeowomen put up a valiant effort.
After falling 30-15 and 30-24 in the first two games, the Yeowomen refused to back down. Oberlin struck back by winning game three 30-28. In the effort, the team tallied six kills. The Bishops would go on to finish the match with a 30-21 victory in the final game.
“You could feel our energy level tonight,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “This team has come so far this year, and the fact that we were able to execute things that we’ve worked on in practice for only three days proves that.”
The Yeowomen are 3-17 on the season, and 0-5 in the NCAC. The team will host conference rival Wooster at noon on Saturday.
--- Oberlin College women’s volleyball defeated Hilbert College 30-21, 30-21 and 30-9 in a non-conference match Saturday.
The Yeowomen fell to Frostburg State in three, but came out victorious against the Hawks. The team had 12 aces, five of which came from junior Meaghan Pugh. First-year Isabella Gambuto had a .400 hitting percentage in the game, and first-year Caitlin Donnelly tallied 13 assists.
“We looked smooth,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We really looked together today, and if we can continue to get the ball to our middles, then I think we’ll continue to have success.”
The win brings the Yeowomen to 3-16 on the season, and 0-4 in the NCAC. The squad will return to NCAC play on Wednesday as they host Ohio Wesleyan University at 7:30 p.m.
--- Oberlin College women’s volleyball was defeated by Allegheny College this Tuesday evening. Match scores were 13-30, 19-30, and 18-30.
The Yeowomen came out strong at the beginning of each match, but were unable to keep up with a strong Allegheny offense. Katie Au led the Oberlin defense with sixteen digs.
“We just didn’t have it this game,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “Normally we’re an excellent passing team, but we just couldn’t find it this evening.”
The loss drops the Yeowomen to 2-15 on the season, and 0-4 in the NCAC. The squad will look to regain momentum as they face Hilbert College in a non-conference game this Saturday.
--- Kenyon College used a great hitting performance and consistent play to down Oberlin College 30-24, 30-17, 30-27 in volleyball on Saturday afternoon.
The Ladies engaged in a back and forth affair with the host Yeowomen, coming from behind in the final game to win the match. Oberlin was paced by seven team aces and 10 kills from sophomore Deysi Villarreal.
“We carried over our enthusiasm from Thursday,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We made adjustments during the match. We are showing greater consistency in our play as the season goes on.”
The Yeowomen drop to 2-14 on the season and 0-3 in the NCAC. Oberlin hosts Allegheny College on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
--- The Oberlin College volleyball team broke out to a 1-0 lead with a 30-28 win, but was unable to keep their momentum as they lost 30-24, 30-17, and 30-25 to Bluffton University Thursday night in Oberlin.
Leading the way in the effort with 26 assists was first-year Caitlin Donnelly. The Yeowomen showed outstanding effort, amassing seven blocks as a team.
“This is the best we’ve played since our tournament,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We played as a team and relied on each other as teammates. We were able to make adjustments during the match and did a good job listening to each other.”
The Yeowomen fall to 2-13 on the season and host Kenyon College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in a NCAC matchup.
October 1, 2005 --- The Oberlin College volleyball team was defeated by Earlham College, 30-11, 30-15 and 30-18 on Saturday in a North Coast Athletic Conference matchup.
“Hopefully, we are going to learn and grow from these past few games and start working together better as a team,” Head Coach Carrie Cavanough said. “We need to start depending on one another, and when we do that, I think we’ll find our stride.”
The Yeowomen fall to 2-12 on the season. They take on Bluffton College Wednesday on their home court in a non-conference matchup.
--- The Yeowomen volleyball team traveled to Granville, but fell short of bringing home a victory.
Oberlin dropped game one, 30-15, game two, 30-16, and game three, 30-17. The squad could not find a rythm, as The Big Red rolled in straight games.
The loss drops Oberlin to 2-11 on the season. The team will travel to Earlham College on October 1 in an NCAC conference match.
--- In another night of close games, the Yeowomen volleyball squad fell short 3-0 against Heidelberg College on Tuesday evening.
Oberlin dropped game one, 30-23, game two, 30-22, and game three, 30-25. Jeanne Feuerstein led the team with 18 digs. As a team, the Yeowomen had four solo blocks and six block assists, which Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh had been stressing in practice.
“We just couldn't finish out the last leg of the game ” Cavanaugh said. “That's the thing about volleyball. The score doesn't really reflect how good this team really is.”
The loss drops Oberlin to 2-10 on the season. The squad will take on Denison University on September 28th at 7:00 p.m. in an NCAC conference match.
--- The Wilmington College Lady Quakers defeated the Oberlin College Yeowomen in three close matches Saturday afternoon. Match scores were 31-29, 30-28, and 30-21.
Oberlin battled back from a seven-point deficit late in the first match to tie the score at 29, but could not capitalize. After falling behind 27-18 in the second match, Oberlin staged another comeback, but was shut down by Wilmington after coming within two points of clinching the match.
“We did a good job of executing what we did in practice,” Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. “We are doing what we need to do. We are strengthening our weaknesses, and we need to be mentally stronger as a team.”
The loss drops Oberlin to 2-9 on the season. On Tuesday evening, The Yeowomen travel to Tiffin, Ohio, for a non-conference match at Heidelberg College.
--- Lake Erie College came from behind to post a 3-1 victory over Oberlin College in volleyball on Wednesday night.
Match scores were 27-30, 30-26, 30-27, and 30-26. Katie Au had 42 digs for the Yeowomen, while the team totaled 89 digs.
"We did a lot of things well," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "We did a better job of keeping the ball off the floor and made some good hustle plays. We just need to finish."
The loss drops Oberlin to 2-8 overall. The Yeowomen host Wilmington College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
--- The Yeowomen volleyball squad finished up a two-day tournament at Baldwin-Wallace College on Saturday afternoon. Case Western Reserve University defeated Oberlin 30-15, 30-21, 30-16, while Carnegie Mellon University outlasted the Yeowomen 30-16, 30-8, and 30-25.
Oberlin falls to 2-7 on the season. The Yeowomen travel to Lake Erie College on September 14 for a 7:00 p.m. matchup with the Lakers.
--- The Yeowomen volleyball squad fell in their first two matches at the Baldwin-Wallace Tournament on Friday evening. Oberlin lost to Kenyon College 30-17, 30-20, 30-18 and Mount Union College 30-17, 30-18, and 30-23.
The tournament resumes tomorrow morning. Oberlin falls to 2-5 on the season.
--- The Oberlin College volleyball squad fell to Ursuline College 3-1 on Tuesday evening. Match scores were 30-18, 22-30, 30-19, 31-29.
"Each match is a learning experience for us," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "We can take things away from this match to fix tomorrow at practice, and we are looking forward to getting better each time out."
Senior Katie Au led the Yeowomen with 19 digs. First-year Elizabeth Seagroves had two solo blocks, while first-year Caitlin Donnelly and sophomore Deysi Villarreal combined for 39 assists.
Oberlin, 2-3 on the season, heads to Baldwin-Wallace College for tournament action this Friday.
--- The Oberlin College volleyball squad wrapped up the Oberlin Invitational on Saturday with a fourth-place finish. The Yeowomen dropped their final match in pool play to Bethany College 3-2 and lost to Ohio Wesleyan University in the third-place match 3-0.
Oberlin's match with Bethany tested a squad that had won two contests the night before. After falling in game one 30-12, the Yeowomen squeaked by in game two 30-27. Bethany took game three 30-22, dropped game four 31-29, and prevailed in game five 16-14.
"We started slowly this morning," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "I think we imprvoed as the day went on. going 2-2 in our invitational is a great accomplishment for us."
Ohio Wesleyan dropped Oberlin 30-13, 30-21, 30-28 for third place. Senior Katie Au and sophomore Deysi Villarreal were selected to the All-Tournament team.
Oberlin, now 2-2 on the season, travels to Ursuline College for a 7:00 p.m. match on Tuesday.
--- The Yeowomen volleyball team started the season with a pair of wins on Friday evening. Oberlin defeated the University of Pittsburgh-Greensburg 3-2 and LaRoche College 3-0 in pool play.
"I'm so proud of our players," Head Coach Carey Cavanaugh said. "They worked hard during fall camp, they never complained, and now they are reaping the benefits of what they put into practice."
The Yeowomen started off with a hard-fought match against UPG. After losing game one 27-30, Oberlin climbed back to win the next two stanzas 30-19 and 30-28. UPG evened the score with a three-point game win in game four, but Oberlin closed out the win with a 15-11 victory in the deciding game.
"We were anxious and excited," Cavanaugh said. "We were not quite as disciplined in our first match as I would have liked. We came back against LaRoche and played well. When we pass well, we can run our offense, and we did that in the second match."
Indeed, Oberlin crushed the Redhawks 30-25, 30-14, 30-21. The win put the Yeowomen at 2-0 heading into tomorrow's final pool play match with Bethany College at 11:00 a.m. The championship round begins at 1:00 p.m. with the fifth and seventh place matches, followed by the third place and championship matches at 3:00 p.m.
