April 27 – Oberlin College junior Kyle Taljan registered 5,732 points in the decathlon to establish a new school record and earn a second-place finish at the 2008 NCAC Multi-event Championships on Oberlin’s campus this weekend.
Also representing Oberlin in the heptathlon this weekend was sophomore Madeline Schultz as she ended in third place with 4,096 points.
Taljan, who broke his own school record by 345 points, shined in the throwing events by winning the shot put and finishing second in the javelin. His shot put hurl covered 33-08.5 and his discus launch went 97-01. His second-place javelin throw went 151-09.
North Ridgeville, Ohio (St. Ignatius HS) native also finished second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.62. He added third place finishes in the long jump (19-05.5), 400-meter dash (53.29) and pole vault (12-11).
Schultz was sitting in fourth place going into the final event for the women, but her first-place time of 2:20.11 in the 800-meters vaulted her into third place.
Like Taljan, Schultz also took top honors in the shot put as her toss covered 30-03.5. The Concord, Mass. (Concord Carlisle HS) native also added third-place efforts in the 100-meter hurdles (16.14), high jump (4-11.5), and 200 meter dash (27.39).
The entire Oberlin College track and field will be competing next weekend at the NCAC Championships on the campus of Ohio Wesleyan University.
