February 18 – For the second time this season, Oberlin College first-year student Joanna Johnson has earned NCAC Distance Runner of the Week honors, while senior Anna Chernin picked up her first Runner of the Week honor in the Sprints/Hurdles category, the league office announced on Sunday evening.
Johnson, a native of Chico, Calif. (Chico HS), recorded a lifetime-best time of 18:15.47 to win the women’s 5k run at the All-Ohio Championships on Saturday (Feb.16). She bested a highly competitive 16-runner field – beating the second-place finisher by over eight seconds (18:23.99).
Johnson, who is also the 2007 NCAC Cross County Champion, first earned Runner of the Week honors on Feb.3 after winning the 5k run in 18:31.67 at the NCAC Relays on Feb. 2.
Chernin, a senior from Ann Arbor, Mich.,had an outstanding All-Ohio meet as she checked in fourth out of 15 in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 60.61. She also ran the anchor leg of the second place 4-x-400 meter relay team that completed the course in 4:08.45.
Johnson and Chernin’s performances helped the Yeowomen finish sixth (45.5 pts) as a team in the 15-team competition.
Oberlin will have its final tune-up before the NCAC Championships when they travel to the Greater Cleveland Open on Friday, Feb. 22.
