Oberlin Completes Day One at Bayou Classic

March 29 -Oberlin College men's and women's track and field teams concluded day one events late in the evening Friday. Competing outdoors for the first time this season at Rice University's Bayou Classic head coach Ray Appenheimer said, "The team is doing well and they are holding their own against Division 1 competition."

Fellow Oberlin track and field team members are joining decathlete Kyle Taljan's fine effort from Thursday.  Joanna Johnson turned in a blistering run in the women’s 10,000 meter race stopping the clock in 37:41.01.  Coach Appenheimer noted that this opening meet time is only about six seconds shy of a national meet qualifying time.

Fellow distance runner Ryan King turned the track in 4:03.48 during the men’s 1500 meter run.  This is the fastest time that King, a junior middle distance runner, has posted in an opening outdoor meet.

Yeomen first-year thrower, Josh Gallagher heaved the hammer 37.30 meters for an 11th place finish.  This toss of 122 feet, 4 inches is about a foot shy of the Oberlin College school record according to coach Appenheimer.

The Yeomen and Yeowomen will continue with competition today concluding this evening.  The meet should be great preparation for the remainder of the spring schedule.
