-- The Oberlin College men's and women's swimmers and divers continued their record-setting ways during the second day of The College of Wooster Invitational. Two school records fell for the Yeowomen, while several other outstanding performances highlighted an exciting day two.
Record number one fell in the first event of the evening. The women's 200-yard medley relay squad of first-year Sara Kadi, sophomores Shannon Gallagher and Laura Fries, and junior Bryne Ulmschneider hit the wall in 1:53.41, good for a new Yeowomen best and a third-place finish in the event. Kadi then grabbed her third school record of the meet. The Piedmont, Calif., native won the 100-yard butterfly in 58.99, just missing an NCAA "B" cut in the event.
The Yeowomen continued their superlative efforts throughout the evening. Ulmschneider raced to a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle (2:00.59, a season-best), while Fries touched fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.02. First-year diver Christine Martin finished third in the one-meter board, while the 800-yard freestyle relay team of Kadi, first-year Jenny Meltz, Gallagher, and Ulmschneider won in 8:05.79.
Junior Scott McInerney again led the Yeomen with a fourth-place effort in the 100-yard butterfly. First-year teammate Cory Spiro touched right behind McInernery in fifth place with a time of 53.20. Fellow first-year Jon Vimr recorded a seventh-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle (1:48.52), while senior Cory Myers plunged to third place in the one-meter diving event.
Head Coach Mark Fino could not contain his enthusiasm. "The team is performing very well," the second-year mentor said. "This was another amazing day for us. We are finishing races strong and swimming with a pride and passion I have not seen before. Our athletes are excited to compete."
The meet concludes tomorrow with prelims at 10:00 a.m. and finals at 5:00 p.m.
