Final Day of Wooster Invite Proves Exciting for Swimmers and Divers

December 1 , 2007 -- Three more school records fell on the final day of The College of Wooster Invitational. First-year swimmers Jenny Meltz and Sara Kadi added to their record totals with outstanding performances in tonight's finals.

The Yeowomen kicked off the evening with a 1-2 finish in the 1650-yard freestyle. Meltz set an Oberlin record with her winning time of 17:59.67, and she also broke the school record in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:53.13) en route. Classmate Kelsey Sherman grabbed second place in a personal best time of 18:33.23.

Head Coach Mark Fino's precocious group of rookies continued to set the pool on fire. Sara Kadi notched her fourth school record of the meet with a 2:12.11 performance and win in the 200-yard butterfly. Sophomore Laura Fries swam her way to a runner-up finish in the 200-yard backstroke (2:12.11), while first-year diver Christine Martin placed third in the three-meter event. The Yeowomen wrapped up with a fourth-place effort in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:43.83 (second-fasetest time in Oberlin history). Team members were Kadi, first-year Jordan Jancosek, sophomore Shannon Gallagher, and junior Bryne Ulmschneider.

Senior captain Cory Myers dove his way to a third-place effort in the three-meter board to lead the Yeomen. First-year Cory Spiro finished third in the 200-yard butterfly, while senior John Hugens (2:03.49) and first-year Jon Vimr (2:04.26) each swam to personal bests in the 200-yard backstroke.

"We had an awesome meet," Fino said. "We competed well for three days. All of our hard work has paid off in the first part of the season, and I am so proud of this team. We are looking forward to winter training and making a move up in the conference meet."

The Yeowomen finished in fourth place overall. The Yeomen grabbed fifth place, just ahead of conference rival Allegheny.
