-- The Oberlin men's and women's swimming and diving teams fared well in the first of three days at The College of Wooster Invitational. Two individual victories and a host of top performances highlighted the opening day of this nine-team event.
The women's 200-yard freestyle relay team of first-years Sara Kadi and Jordan Jancosek, sophomore Shannon Gallagher, and junior Bryne Ulmschneider swam the second-fastest time in Oberlin history (1:42.68) on their way to a fourth place finish to open the meet. The Yeowomen came back with a 1-2-4-8 finish in the 500-yard freestyle. First-years Jenny Meltz (5:20.15) and Kelsey Sherman (5:24.98, a personal best) led the charge. Ulmschneider claimed fourth, while sophomore Laura Fries touched the wall in eighth place. Gallagher sprinted her way to a seventh-place effort in the 50-yard freestyle, touching in at 25.48.
The top swim of the day, however, belonged to Kadi. The outstanding rookie hit the NCAA "B" cut standard in winning the 200-yard individual medley in a time of 2:09.86. That swim also shattered the Oberlin school record.
The Yeomen were paced by the efforts of two first-years and a junior. Rookies Cory Spiro and Jon Vimr each recorded season-best times in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.87 and 2:02.37). Veteran Scott McInerney earned a fifth place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.05.
"We swam very well," Oberlin Head Coach Mark Fino said. "The first-years stepped up and had a great first day of swimming in a championship format meet. We are looking to continue this momentum into the next two days of competition."
The meet continues tomorrow. Prelims begin at 10:00 a.m., with finals starting at 6:00 p.m.
