January 5, 2008 – After a 35-day layoff for winter break, the Oberlin College swimming and diving team returned to action on Saturday afternoon at the Orange Bowl Classic in Key Largo, Fla.
First-year standout Sara Kadi led the Yeowomen with a first-place finish in the 100-meter butterfly with a mark of 1:09.93. The Piedmont, California (Piedmont HS) native also took second place in the 200-meter IM - completing the course in 2:34.47. Kadi rounded-out her excellent day with a strong showing in the 50-meter butterfly – finishing in fourth place with a time of 31.32.
“It was a very fun meet,” second-year head coach Mark Fino said. “It was great to get everyone back into the pool as we are looking to have great success over the next two months and on into the conference championships.”
On the men’s side, junior Scott McInerney (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) displayed his sprinting ability as he finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle with a time of 26.60. McInerney also earned a sixth-place finish in the 50-meter butterfly after touching the wall in 29.04.
First-year swimmer Jon Vimr (Savoy, Ill./Champaign Central HS) put together an excellent effort in the 100-meter backstroke with a mark of 1:07.38, ending in fifth place.
Overall the Yeowomen ended in sixth place out of nine teams, while the men also ended in sixth – finishing just seven points behind Vassar
College.
Oberlin will remain in the Sunshine State for the remainder of the week to continue its training. It will return home on Friday, Jan. 11, to host Ohio Northern University at 6 p.m. EST.
