February 14 – After one full day of swimming at the NCAC Championships, the Oberlin College Yeowomen sit in fifth place with 186 points.

“We swam much better and smarter tonight,” head coach Mark Fino said. “I was extremely happy to see the performances we got especially after getting off to a slow start this morning.”

Senior Kiri Ulmschneider put together a lifetime-best swim of 5:19.13 in the 500-yard free.

“I was extremely proud of Kiri tonight,” Fino added. “This was a great beginning to what should be a great final meet for her career.”

First-year Sara Kadi also swam a much smarter race in the 200-yard IM as she finished fifth overall with an NCAA ‘B’ qualifying time of 2:10.87 – shaving nearly two seconds off of her preliminary time of 2:12.15.

“Sara came into this race with a better game plan than she did in the morning,” Fino said. “I was glad to see she was able to make the adjustments we talked about, and I think the strategy really paid off.”

Fellow first-year Jenny Meltz also improved on her morning mark in the 500-yard free as she won the ‘C’ final in 5:17.22 – which would have been good for fifth place in the ‘B’ final had she qualified in the preliminary round.

“Jenny, like Sara, also made the proper adjustments to be successful tonight,” Fino added. “I was a little disappointed with the results from the morning, but both Jenny and Sara showed what they are made of by correcting their mistakes and having great swims.”

First-year diver Christine Martin also had a strong effort off of the 3-meter board as she finished in third place with 291.75 points – marking the highest finish ever for any Yeodiver at the conference meet.

On the men’s side, Jon Vimr (2:00.75) and Corey Spiro (2:00.83) each recorded lifetime-best times in the 200-yard IM.

Senior diver Cory Myers tallied 380.70 points in 1-meter diving to finish in fourth place.

As a team the Yeomen sit in ninth place with 114 points.

Day-two prelims will get underway tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. with events 13-26.
