-- Head Coach Mark Fino's
Oberlin College swimming and diving team made the
short trip to Cleveland this evening to compete
in day one of Case Western Reserve University's
Veale Classic. The Yeomen and Yeowomen went head-to-head
against the host Spartans - Oberlin fell 100-127
in the women's contest and 61-159 in the men's
showdown.
A good amount of very strong individual
performances didn't quite add up to team wins for Fino's
Yeomen and Yeowomen, but nonetheless, there were quite
a few highlights in the water tonight.
First-year Jenny Meltz continued her
strong debut season by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle
in 11:04.75. Classmate Sara Kadi won a pair of races,
touching the wall first in both the 200-yard individual
medley (2:12.76) and the 100-yard butterfly (59.52).
Kadi's times in the two events were career highs and
the fastest times of the year for the Yeowomen. Christine
Martin had another great night diving, winning both
the one- and three-meter competitions.
The Yeomen were led tonight by junior
Scott McInerney and senior Cory Myers. McInerney won
the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.67, just .02
seconds off his season-best time. Myers dove extremely
well, winning both the one- and three-meter events.
Oberlin will return to the pool deck
at Case tomorrow morning at 10:30 a.m. for continued
action at the Veale Classic.
