December 2, 2006 -- Head Coach Mark Fino's men's and women's swimming and diving teams concluded the three-day Wooster Invitational this evening with continued success. The Yeowomen placed sixth in the tournament, while the Yeomen finished in seventh place.
Senior Kate Boyd, sophomore Bryne Ulmschneider, and first-year Laura Fries led the way for the Yeowomen this evening. Boyd just missed out on an Oberlin all-time top five time in the 200-yard butterfly by placing ninth with a time of 2:34.86. Ulmschneider earned third place in the 1,650-yard freestyle by touching the wall in 18:51.49. Her effort in the event was the fifth fastest time ever at Oberlin, just two seconds behind sister Kiri Ulmschneider's time of 18:49.53 in 2004. Fries was one of the Yeowomen's top finishers throughout the Wooster Invitational, and she put a finishing touch on her solid performance by placing fifth in the 200-yard backstroke (2:14.98 - third fastest time ever at Oberlin).
Sophomore Scott McInerney capped off an excellent three days of competition by placing second in the 200-yard butterfly. His preliminary time of 1:57.72 was a lifetime best and improved upon his already fifth-fastest time in school history. Additionally, classmate Mark Muthersbaugh had a great meet by notching a lifetime-best time of 51.77 in the 100-yard free. He also recorded a 50.70 split in the 400-yard freestyle relay, while McINerney boasted an impressive lead-off split of 48.73. First-year Dan Holm added to a solid day for the Yeomen by notching a lifetime-best time of 2:23.88 in the 200-yard breaststroke.
"I'm very pleased with the way our team performed the past three days," Head Coach Mark Fino said. "We just swam really well and it's exciting to see outstanding efforts, including personal bests from many of our swimmers. It was a great meet. "
The Yeomen and Yeowomen will travel to Florida from January 3-11 for their winter training trip. They will return to dual meet action on January 12 at Ohio Northern University (6:00 p.m.).
