November 30, 2006 -- The results from day one of The College of Wooster Invitational are in and the Oberlin swimming and diving team finished the evening with an outstanding overall performance. Head Coach Mark Fino's Yeomen and Yeowomen busted out all-time top five swims on numerous occasions, gaining excellent momentum heading into the final two days of competition at Wooster.
The women were highlighted by the fourth-place finishing 200-yard freestyle relay squad. The foursome of senior co-captain Emily Spence, sophomores Ploy Keener and Bryne Ulmschneider, and first-year Shannon Gallagher finished the event over six second ahead of their seed time, earning 52 points by touching the wall in 1:43.44. The effort by the Yeowomen was the second fastest time in school history.
Ulmschneider had an outstanding swim in the 500-yard freestyle, finishing in second place with a time of 5:19.19. Another impressive individual performance for the Yeowomen came from Gallagher. In a field of 24 swimmers, Gallagher placed fourth in the 50-freestyle by finishing the race in 25.33, good for an all-time top five Oberlin swim.
Sophomore Scott McInerney continued to lead the men's team this evening. He earned 28 points with an all-time top five Oberlin swim and second-place finish of 21.66 in the 50-yard freestyle.
Day two of the three-day Wooster Invitational will begin tomorrow morning with preliminaries and conclude in the evening with the finals.
