First-year Laura Fries and sophomore Scott McInerney both had outstanding days at Ohio Wesleyan |
November 4, 2006 -- Oberlin's swimming and diving teams traveled to Delaware, Ohio, this afternoon to face Ohio Wesleyan University in a North Coast Athletic Conference dual meet. While the meet ultimately ended in a loss for the Yeomen (75-128) and Yeowomen (103-134), Head Coach Mark Fino's teams had quite a few moments of brilliance against the Battling Bishops.
First-year Laura Fries paced the Yeowomen by winning the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:17.32. Fries' effort was the fifth-fastest time ever completed by a Yeowomen in the event. She also was a part of the women's winning 400-yard medley relay team. Oberlin completed the race in 4:24.50, earning 11 points for the victory. Fries was joined by senior Kim Meinert, junior Kiri Ulmschneider, and first-year Shannon Gallagher in the event.
Ulmschneider and Gallagher both also had individual wins in the dual meet. Ulmschneider was victorious in the 200-yard butterfly (2:25.52) and the 400-yard individual medley (5:00.38), while Gallagher won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.40.
The Yeomen were led today by sophomores Scott McInerney and Mark Muthersbaugh. McInerney swam impressively in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall first in 2:09.10. Muthersbaugh claimed two victories, winning the 50-yard freestyle in 24.58 and 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.86. The men's 400-yard freestyle relay team also provided a nice highlight, earning first place (3:35.26) in a race that came down to the last leg. McInerney edged Ohio Wesleyan's Usman Javaid in the fourth leg of the event, as the Battling Bishops finished just five tenths of a second behind the Yeomen. McInerney was joined by Muthersbaugh, James Barnard, and first-year Jacob Wishart in the win.
"It was a great meet and I felt that we swam really well," Fino said. "It's a bit disappointing to get the loss , but the effort and heart was definitely there. I'm proud of our team, and if we keep training hard and swimming well, good things will happen."
The Yeomen and Yeowomen will return to action on November 10 at the Cleveland State Invitational (4:00 p.m.)
