January 12, 2007 -- In their first meet since a winter training trip to Florida, the Oberlin men's and women's swimming and diving teams traveled to Ada, Ohio, to face non-conference opponent Ohio Northern University. Despite strong swims and dives from Head Coach Mark Fino's teams, the Yeomen and Yeowomen were defeated by the Polar Bears. The men lost to Ohio Northern 53-225, while the women fell 119-177.
Junior Kiri Ulmschneider had a very solid night for the Yeowomen, as she won three races: the 400-yard individual medley, the 1,000-yard freestyle, and the 200-yard butterfly. In the 1,000 free, Ulmschneider beat her seed time by over three seconds and touched the wall over thirty seconds ahead of the second-place finisher. Bryne Ulmschneider also swam well, winning the 200 and 500-yard freestyle events. The sophomore edged Ohio Northern's Kim Randall in the 200-yard free by just two hundreths of a second (2:02.75). Also notching a win for the Oberlin women's team was Laura Fries. Just a first-year, Fries won the 200-yard backstroke in 2:16.
Junior Cory Myers provided the only first-place finish for the Yeomen, as they faced a tough Polar Bear squad. Myers accumulated 215.95 points in the three-meter diving event to claim the victory. Sophomore Scott McInerney racked up second-place finishes in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle races and the 100-yard fly. Classmate Mark Muthersbaugh placed second in a pair of races, the 100 and 200-yard backstrokes. First-year Dan Holm added a second-place effort in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.56.
The Oberlin women's team will return to action tomorrow afternoon in a non-conference dual meet at the College of Notre Dame (1:00 p.m.). The Yeomen will join the Yeowomen in a trip to Washington and Jefferson College (Pa) on January 19 (4:30 p.m.) for their next contest.
