November 17, 2006 -- The Oberlin College women’s swimming team came within split-seconds of winning its first match of the season but lost by one point, 115 to 116, to visiting Hiram College this evening. The men’s team had their closest match of the season, but lost 86 to 106.

On the final race of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay, the women needed to place first and third to win the match, but fell-short by a few split-seconds and placed first and fourth. The women were equally matched with Hiram and nearly won their first match. The men swam well, but suffered from their lack of depth.

“We are disappointed with the loss, but the team swam great and swam with heart and courage,” Head Coach Mark Fino said.

The Yeowomen placed first in eight of the eleven swimming events. Sophomore Bryne Ulmschneider placed first in the 1000-yard free in 11:21.76. She also won the 500-yard free with a time of 5:30.93. In the 200-yard backstroke, first-year Laura Fries finished first with a time of 2:17.38, which set a new personal and team season record. Junior Kiri Ulmschneider won the 400-yard individual medley with a new personal and team best time of 4:55.75. Senior co-captain Emily Spence finished first in the 50-yard free with a good time of 25.84.

First-year Shannon Gallagher placed first in the 100-yard free with a time of 55.72. Senior Kim Meinert finished first in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:39.89. In the 400-yard free relay, the team of sophomore Ploy Keener, Spence, Bryne Ulmschneider, and Gallagher finished first in 3:50.58. The women also had several strong swims from senior Lisa Weigle in the 400-yard individual medley and first-year Megan Yau in the 200-yard back.

The men placed first in six of their swimming races, which led to their closest match of the season. First-year Daniel Holm won the 1000-yard free in 11:21.46, which was a personal and team season best. Holm also finished first in the 200-yard breast with a time of 2:29.44. In the 200-yard free, sophomore Scott McInerney placed first with a time of 1:56.38. He also won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:13.36. Sophomore Mark Muthersbaugh finished first in the 50-yard free in 24.20. In the 400-yard free relay, the team of James Barnard, first-year Jacob Wishart, McInerney, and Muthersbaugh placed first.

“It was a great meet and we turned in some good times,” Fino added.

Oberlin will next compete in the Wooster Invitational at Wooster College on November 30 to December 2.
