October 28, 2006 -- The Oberlin College swimming and diving squad hosted Denison University in its first dual match-up of the season today at Carr Pool. The women’s team fell to Denison University, 79-141, but swam strongly and had several Oberlin all-time top-five individual finishes. The men fell 49-154 to the Big Red.
For the women, first-year Shannon Gallagher had an Oberlin all-time top-five finish in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:01.94 and finished first in the 100-yard free in 56.22. Oberlin also received Yeowomen all-time top-five finishes from first-year Laura Fries, who placed first in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:04.32, and junior Kiri Ulmschneider, who finished third in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:04.07. In the 200-yard medley relay, the team of Gallagher, Fries, senior co-captain Emily Spence and sophomore Bryne Ulmschneider finished third with a time of 1:57.31.
For the men, sophomore Scott McInerney placed second in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.55.
“We are still not done, and have a long way to go before we reach our goals set out for the season, but I am very proud and very excited by the way this team responded to its first dual-meet competition for the season,” Head Coach Mark Fino said.
Oberlin will return to action at Baldwin-Wallace College on November 1 at 4:30 pm.
