Oberlin Swimming and Diving Teams Earn Academic All-America Honors from the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA)

July 11 -- The Oberlin College swimming and diving team was recently honored by the Collegiate Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) for its outstanding performance in the classroom. Head Coach Mark Fino's men's and women's programs ranked near the top of the nation academically in NCAA Division III.

Among over 400 programs from all three NCAA Divisions and the NAIA, the Yeomen ranked 23rd and the Yeowomen placed 27th in the highly represented Division III category. The Oberlin men's program accumulated a 3.26 GPA, while the women's team amassed a 3.39 GPA.

The 2005-2006 season marked a year of success for the Oberlin swimming and diving team both in and out of the water. The CSCAA Team Award was the second time the men and women had been honored by the group this season. In competition this year, Fino's teams saw eight school records go down, while also recording numerous top times.

Alumni Gather to Celebrate Dick Michaels Retirement

April 29 -- Over 160 alums from all across the country came back to Oberlin College to honor their former coach, Dick Michaels on April 22. In over 30 years of coaching, Michaels has led teams to 41 individual championships, 72 All-American Awards, and six national championships.

The event was a testament to the strength of Oberlin alums, and their outpouring of support for Oberlin swimming and diving. Featured speakers included Dave Shipley, former dean of UGA law school, Lisa Matovcik, patent attorney, Dave Stevenson, Harvard professor, and Rahula Strohl, sportswriter for the Chicago Tribune.

Dick and his wife, Jan, plan to retire at their lake house in Three Rivers, Michigan.

Men Ranked Seventh on Academic All-America Team

March 29, 2006 ---The College Swimming Coaches Association of America announced its Academic All-America teams and two hundred and seventy five squads representing 170 different institutions made the academic list.

The Yeomen ranked seventh on the list of Division III institutions, finishing the season with a 3.28 team gpa.

Mark Fino Named Head Coach for Swimming and Diving

March 27, 2006 ---After conducting a national search that attracted many outstanding candidates, Oberlin College announces the hiring of Mark Fino as the next head coach of men’s and women’s swimming and diving. His appointment begins July 1, 2006.

Fino, a 2002 graduate of Kalamazoo College, brings an outstanding background as a swimmer and coach to the Oberlin program. A four-year letter winner for the Hornets, Fino specialized in the 400-yard individual medley. He also excelled in the 500-yard freestyle and 200-yard butterfly. Fino was a member of four Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association championship teams (1999-2002), and he was voted Most Improved Swimmer his freshman, junior, and senior seasons.

“I am very pleased with the excitement and experience Mark Fino brings to both of our swimming and diving programs,” Interim Delta Lodge Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard said. “He has demonstrated his understanding and appreciation of Oberlin College, and he is committed to building upon our outstanding athletic traditions.”

A native of Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Fino majored in psychology at Kalamazoo. He has spent the last four years at Oberlin as an assistant coach to Dick Michaels and the head coach of women’s swimming and diving.  He has guided the women’s program to ten school records, over 40 all-time top-five swims, and the Yeowomen’s best dual meet record in over six years.

“I will be following in the footsteps of a great coach, Dick Michaels,” Fino said. “While his reputation and impact on this program will be carried throughout my tenure, I am fortunate to have the opportunity to continue building a great program. This is an exciting moment in my career. I have the opportunity and responsibility to lead a great institution into the next phase of a long swimming history.”

NCAC Championships Come to an End

February 11, 2006 ---The North Coast Athletic Conference Championships ended on Saturday evening. The Yeomen finished in sixth place with 577 points, while the Yeowomen came in eighth with 578.5 points. Powerhouse Kenyon College took first-place for both the men and women.

The Yeowomen continued to make their mark on the top of Oberlin's all-time top five. The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Emily Spence, Kir Selert, Ploy Keener and Bryne Ulmschneider finished in 3:42.92, nearly two seconds faster than the current record. The Oberlin women finished eighth with 450 points.

Top finishers for the men included first-year Scott McInerney and senior Craig Betchart. McInerney finished eighth in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:58.24, while Betchart put up an eighth place swim in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 47.73.

“The team really showed a lot of effort and character over these last three days,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “Our seniors went out on a great note, while our first-years proved that they are the new leaders of the team.”

Records Continue to Fall at NCAC Championships

February 10, 2006 --- Oberlin swimmers continued to put up impressive times on the second day of the NCAC Swimming and Diving Championships in Canton, Ohio.

Highlights for the Yeowomen include several all-time Oberlin bests. First-year Bryne Ulmschneider set the new standard by finishing the 200-yard freestyle in 1:58.27 in the preliminaries. Older sister, Kiri, broke her own record in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:44.36. The 200-yard medley relay team of Marsha Guy, Maura Selenak, Emily Spence and Kir Selert clocked out at 1:53.89. Both Ulmschneider’s, Guy and Selert also shattered the current record in the 800-yard freestyle relay. Their time of 8:03.98 was nearly 16 seconds faster than the current top team.

The men were paced by first-year Scott McInerney. He placed fourth in the 100-yard butterfly. His 52.39 finish ranks fourth on the Oberlin top ten. The team of Craig Betchart, Zach Kaplan-Moss, McInerney and Thomas Limouze placed fourth in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 7:10.64.

“We had another great day,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “I’m extremely pleased with the way we swam today. We’re looking forward to the final day of competition.”

School Records Broken at First Day of NCAC Championship Meet

February 9, 2006 --- After day one of the swimming and diving NCAC Championship meet, the men are currently in fifth place with 160 points, while the women stand in seventh place with 145 points.

For the Yeowomen, three school records were broken. First-year Bryne Ulmschneider shattered the record in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:13.56, nearly five seconds faster than the previous record. The relay team made up of Marsha Guy, Bryne and Kiri Ulmschneider and Maura Selenak cracked the Oberlin all-time mark in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:06.56. Finally, with a time of 1:42.24, the 200-yard freestyle relay team of Maura Selenak, Kir Selert, Ploy Keener and Emily Spence made their way into the record books.

The Yeomen found success in the 500-yard freestyle, as senior Thomas Limouze finished in eighth place with a time of 4:47.02.

"We had just an outstanding effort today," Director of Swimming and Diving Dick Michaels said. "Across the board, we had great swims, and we competed very, very well."

The Championships continue tomorrow. Results will continue to be posted as they are made available.

Regular Season Wraps Up for Swimming & Diving

January 21, 2006 --- The Oberlin swimming and diving teams finished out their final dual meet of the season at John Carroll University. The men placed second 122-116, while the women took a 123-113 decision.

The Yeomen won 8-13 events at the meet. Leading the way was junior Thomas Limouze. He posted three first-place finishes for the afternoon, 1000-yard freestyle (10:29.82, 200-yard butterfly (2:05.15), and the 500-yard freestyle (5:02.89. Senior Craig Betchart took top honors in 100 and 200-yard freestyle with times of 49.13 and 1:49.46. Other top finishers included first-year Scott McInerney in the 50-yard freestyle (23.19) and sophomore John Hugens in the 200-yard backstroke (2:11.89). The 400-yard freestyle relay team made up of McInerney, Hugens, Zach Kaplan-Moss and Betchart finished in 3:24.00, earning the first-place spot.

The women’s squad took top honors in 9-13 events. Sophomore Kiri Ulmschneider set the pace for the Yeowomen as she took first in three events...the 1000-yard freestyle (11:20.29), 200-yard individual medley (2:20.64), and the 200-yard butterfly (2:21.71). Ulmschneider’s younger sister, Bryne, posted two top finishes of her own. She won the 200-yard freestyle (2:02.81) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:31.83). First-year Marsha Guy added a first-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:18.31. The foursome of Guy, Maura Selenak, Emily Spence and Kir Selert took first in the 400-yard medley relay. The team finished in 4:18.24.

“This was a good way to end our regular season,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “We’ve been training really hard for three weeks, and this is great preparation going into the conference meets.”

Both the men and women will be back in the pool on February 9 for the NCAC Championships. They will take place in Canton, Ohio, with the preliminaries beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the finals at 6:30 p.m.

Oberlin Takes on National Powerhouse Kenyon

January 13, 2006 --- Kenyon College swept Oberlin College this afternoon in a NCAC meet. The Lords defeated the Yeomen 136-85 while the Ladies trumped the Yeowomen 120-96.

Oberlin was paced on the men’s side by senior Craig Betchart, who finished first in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:03.53. He also took top honors in the 100-yard freestyle in 48.98. Senior Thomas Limouze won the 200-yard butterfly in 2:06.35, while first-year Scott McInerney finished the 50-yard freestyle in 22.43, good for a first-place finish. The 400-yard freestyle team made up of Betchart, Zack Kaplan-Moss, Mark Muthersbaugh and Scott McInerney had a first place finish with a time of 3:25.47.

First-year Bryne Ulmschneider won the 200-breaststroke for the Yeowomen with a time of 2:36.34.

“We had a good meet,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “It was senior night, and they went out with some terrific swims. Everyone swam very well after the last two weeks of very intense training.”

Oberlin will travel to John Carroll University next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Swimming and Diving Continues Training in Clearwater

January 6, 2005 --- The Oberlin College Swimming and Diving team traveled to Clearwater Beach, Florida on January 3 for their annual training trip. The squad has spent the last three days training in a long course facility in Clearwater twice a day. Over the course of the trip, each member will swim approximately 10-12,000 meters a day. This trip gives the team the opportunity to train during the winter months, while providing a vacation like experience for the team members.

According to Women's Head Coach Mark Fino, "It is a great trip and a chance to get some time on a quality, long-training course."

The squad will resume their schedule when they host Kenyon College on January 13 at 4:00 p.m.

Swimming and Diving Wraps Up Wooster Invitational

December 3, 2005 --- The Oberlin College swimming and diving squad ended their three-day meet on a high note at The College of Wooster Invitational. The women collected 797 points, good for a sixth place finish, while the men totaled 487 points, giving them a seventh place finish.

The Yeomen’s Craig Betchart finished the 100-yard freestyle in second place with a time of 47.99. Senior Thomas Limouze swam the 1650-yard freestyle in 16:56.35, good for a fourth place finish. First-year Scott McInerney put up a fourth place finish in the 200-yard butterfly in 1:59.66.

A pair of first-years, Marsha Guy and Bryne Ulmschneider, led the women’s team. Guy placed fourth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:14.00, while Ulmschneider finished the 1650-yard freestyle in 19:06.25, good for sixth place.

"All across the board, this was an excellent meet for us," Women's Head Coach Mark Fino said. "The third day is always the toughest, but the whole team continued to put up great scores. We had a couple of school records that were broken this weekend, and overall, I couldn't be happier with the team."

The team will travel to Clearwater Beach, Florida on January 3 for a training trip. The squad will resume their schedule when they host Kenyon College on January 13 at 4:00 p.m.

Another Strong Showing for Swimming and Diving

December 2, 2005 --- The Oberlin men's and women's swim teams had another successful day of competition at The College of Wooster Invitational.

The Yeomen were led by senior Craig Betchart, who finished third in the 200-yard freestyle in 1:46.47. First-year Scott McInerney swam the 100-yard butterfly in53.41, good for fifth place. The 800-yard freestyle team made up of Thomas Limouze, John Hugens, McInerney and Betchart had a fourth place finish with a time of 7:16.08

The Yeowomen broke another school record, this time in the 800-yard freestyle relay. The team of Marsha Guy, Kiri Ulmschneider, Emily Spence and Bryne Ulmschneider finished in 8:19.17, good for fourth place. Bryne also placed fourth in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 2:00.91. Sophomore Maura Selenak was fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:09.33, while first-year Marsha Guy finished fourth in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:02.38.

"Today was another great success for us," Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. "We hope to continue our success going into the final day of the meet.”

Swimmers and Divers Compete at Wooster Invitational

December 1, 2005 --- Oberlin’s swimmers posted great scores on the first day of competition at The College of Wooster Invitational.

The women broke the school record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.38. The relay team made up of Maura Selenak, Ploy Keener, Emily Spence and Kir Selert, finished nearly a second faster than the previous record. Also swimming well for the Yeowomen, first-year Bryne Ulmschneider, who placed fourth in the 500-yard freestyle in 2:07.72. The 400-yard medley relay team of Marsha Guy, Selanak, Kiri Ulmschneider and Selert finished sixth with a time of 4:12.77.

The men were led by senior Thomas Limouze, who placed first in the 500-yard freestyle in 4:46.59. Senior Craig Betchart finished fifth in the 200-yard individual medley in 1:59.91. First-year Scott McInerney placed sixth in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 21.95.

“We had a great day all around,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “Everyone swam really well, and the team continues to impress me.”

Swimmers and Divers Compete at Cleveland State

November 16, 2005 --- The Oberlin college swimming and diving team traveled to Cleveland State to battle it out in a five team dual meet on Wednesday evening.

The Yeomen's fell 154-74 to Baldwin-Wallace, 157-71 to Case Western Reserve, 186-46 to Cleveland State and 170-61 to Gannon.

The Yeowomen's evening resulted in a victory against Case Western Reserve with a score of 120-117. Oberlin was defeated 122-110 by Baldwin-Wallace, 141-84 by Cleveland State and 129-103 by Gannon.

"Zach Kaplan-Moss and Melissa Ising had breakthrough meets and are just now starting to realized their full potential," Women's Head Coach Mark Fino said. "This was a great meet with exceptional competition."

The team will have some much need time off over the next couple of weeks. They will travel to Wooster, Ohio for the College of Wooster Invitational on December 1.

Oberlin Swimmers and Divers Fall to Wittenberg

November 12, 2005 --- The Oberlin college swimming and diving program fell to NCAC rival Wittenberg University this afternoon. The Yeomen were defeated 121-85, while the women lost 134-99.

The men took top honors in five categories. Junior Thomas Limouze accounted for two of the Yeomen’s top finishes. Limouze took the 200-yard butterfly in 2:10.47 and also the 500-yard freestyle in 5:12.76. First-year Scott McInerney completed the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.22. Senior Craig Betchart took first place in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 50.66. The 400 free relay team comprised of Scott McInerney, Mark Muthersbaugh, John Hugens and Craig Betchart also finished first with a 3:28.97 mark.

The women also added three first place finishes. First-year Erin Straight won the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:57.85. Sophomore Maura Selenak finished the 200-yard breaststroke in 2:37.29. The group of Bryne Ulmschneider, Emily Spence, Kirsten Selert and Ploy Keener grabbed first in the 400-yard freestyle relay with a time of 3:53.33, finishing nearly nine seconds quicker than Wittenberg University.

“We had a really hard week of practice,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “We had some good individual performances and we’re looking forward to our next meet on Wednesday.”

Oberlin will travel to Cleveland State on Wednesday for a 6:00 p.m. meet.

Swimmers and Divers Win Pair

November 5, 2005 --- The Oberlin College men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams swept to victories over Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon. While the men won handily by a final of 141-56, the women held their ground down the stretch, winning 121-118.

The Yeowomen swam into the record books with two all-time top-five races. First-year Marsha Guy captured the 200-yard backstroke in a 2:14.64 and also swam a leg on the victorious medley relay team. The other top performance came from first-year Kir Selert, who won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.70. Sophomore Kiri Ulmschneider took three firsts -- the 200-yard butterfly, the 400-yard individual medley, and a leg on the medley relay team.

The men’s team also boasted several multiple event winners. Sophomore Daniel Timchak reined in both diving events, senior Craig Betchart captured the 500-yard freestyle and the 1000-yard freestyle, and senior Thomas Limouze won the 200-yard butterfly as well as the 200-yard freestyle.

Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino remarked on the team’s intense effort to pull ahead in a tight dual. “The athletes did especially well coming off of a win on Wednesday. They responded well to the challenge.”

Oberlin gets back into the water next for a dual at Wittenberg University on Saturday, November 12, at 1:00 p.m.

Oberlin Performs Well Against Baldwin-Wallace

November 2, 2005 --- The Oberlin College swimming and diving team competed against a tough Baldwin-Wallace squad with the women winning 129-102 and the men falling 131-106.

The Baldwin-Wallace women’s team took first place in the OAC championships last season, and this is the first time in five years that the women’s team has won a dual meet. The Ulmschneider sisters dominated in several events. First-year Bryne Ulmschneider took two first place finishes, while sophomore Kiri Ulmschneider took three first place finishes. First-year Kir Selert took top honors in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle.

The group of Erin Straight, Maura Selenak, Marsha Guy and Ploy Keener grabbed first in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.81.

“We swam really well tonight,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “To come out and beat a team like Baldwin-Wallace is just a tremendous victory for us.”

The men's squad squared off against a strong Yellow Jackets. Seniors Thomas Limouze and Craig Betchart accounted for two of Oberlin's wins. Limouze took the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:37.62 and Betchart won the 100-yard freestyle in 49.12.

Oberlin will be back in the pool on Saturday when they host Ohio Wesleyan at 1 p.m.

Oberlin Competes at NCAC Relays

October 22, 2005 --- The Oberlin College men's and women's swimming and diving teams raced to impressive performances at the NCAC Relays on Saturday afternoon.

The Yeomen finished seventh of nine teams with 68 points. Oberlin was led by a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard butterfly relay. Seniors Craig Betchart and Thomas Limouze teamed with first-years Scott McInerney and Mark Muthersbaugh to touch the wall in 1:43.66.

The Yeowomen totaled 72 points to finish sixth overall. The squad was paced by a fourth-place effort in the 200-yard freestyle relay. First-years Kirsten Selert and Ploy Kleener combined with sophomore Maura Selenak and junior Emily Spence to clock 1:44.75

Oberlin hosts Baldwin-Wallace College on November 2nd at 4:30 p.m.

Young Team Shows Promise Against Denison

October 15 , 2005 --- In their first meet of the 2005-2006 season, the Oberlin men's and women's swimming and diving traveled to Granville, Ohio to take on Denison University.

The meet was a proving ground for Oberlin’s young team. First-year Margie Miller had two first place finishes, one in 1 meter diving and the other in 3 meter diving. First-year Marsha Guy finished the 100-yard backstroke in first with a time of 1:05:10. Sophomore Maura Selenak would finish the 100 yard breaststroke in 1:11:69. The other top finisher for Oberlin was Daniel Timchak, who finished first in 1 meter diving and 3 meter diving.

“Our freshman competed well against Denison,” Women’s Head Coach Mark Fino said. “This meet proved that we’re an up and coming program and our results show that we’re going to be able to compete against other competitive programs.”

The team will travel to Kenyon College next Saturday.
