March 23 – Having been away from the diamond for three weeks due the continued wet weather in Ohio, the Oberlin College softball team sure didn’t play like that on Easter Sunday as they challenged both MIT and SUNY Potsdam to the brink before falling just short in both games.
Oberlin (0-6), which fell 5-4 to MIT and 6-4 to Potsdam, was led by Michelle Zanni and Julia Chauvin as they combined for seven hits on the afternoon.
“We played really well,” head coach Adrienne Davis said. “Although we didn’t get the result we were looking for, we played two really good games and it was a great way to start our trip.”
In game one against MIT, the Yeowomen held the lead going into the fifth inning, but MIT used a late rally to steal away the win.
Zanni had a pair of triples and two runs scored, while Chauvin went 2-for-4 at the dish and also scored a run.
Against Potsdam, Oberlin grabbed an early lead in the 1st inning, but Potsdam took the lead right back in the bottom of the frame and then held off multiple OC offensive threats to hang on for the victory.
The dynamic duo of Chauvin and Zanni once against carried the Yeowomen’s offense as Chauvin went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Both players also had had a triple in the game.
“I think the fact that we were able to play in Kentucky really helped us be more prepared,” Davis added. “Hopefully we carry that momentum into the rest of the week down here.”
The Yeowomen will play another split doubleheader tomorrow down in Ft. Myers, Fla. OC will first take on Colby College at 9 a.m., before facing off against Southern Maine at 11 a.m.
