April 29 – The Oberlin College softball team ended their season on a high note, by taking down Franciscan University 9-6 and 12-5 on Tuesday evening.
“This was a good way for us to end our season,” head coach Adrienne Davis said. “We continued to work all year long and hopefully we can build off of this going into the off season and on into next year.”
The Yeowomen’s 12 runs and 12 hits in game marked season-highs in both categories. Jennifer Sees led Oberlin at the plate and on the mound as she was 3-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored. She also worked all seven innings on the mound, striking out three batters en route to earning the win.
First-team All-NCAC candidate, Michelle Zanni also had stellar effort at the dish – going 2-for-4 while adding a season-high four RBI. Ruth Allanbrook and Lauren Luther also added two hits in the game.
Oberlin trailed 2-1 after three innings, but its offense came alive in the fourth with a five-run inning. Allanbrook started the frame off with a triple and scored on a single by Luther. Kate Phillips added another run-scoring single, before Oberlin took advantage of two Franciscan errors to send three more runners across the plate.
The Yeowomen offense was not done after the big fourth as they added three more in the fifth - highlighted by a two-run single from Zanni. OC also added a single tally in the sixth and two in the seventh to run away with the win.
In game one, it was nail-bitter for most of the way as Oberlin led just 2-1 after five complete. However, the Yeowomen used a six-run sixth and fought off Franciscan’s comeback attempt to earn a 9-6 win.
Oberlin had just three hits in the big inning, but took advantage of three errors to score six times. Sophie Schact, who had two hits in the game, highlighted the frame with a two-run single.
Franciscan didn’t go away quietly as it plated three runs in the bottom of the sixth and two more in the seventh, but it was too little too late to steal the win away from the Yeowomen.
Julia Chauvin led Oberlin with three RBI and matched Schact with two hits in the game.
