April 28, 2007 -- The Oberlin College softball team hosted Denison University this afternoon for a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader. The visiting Big Red entered competition today atop the NCAC standings with a 23-13 overall record and 9-1 mark in league play. Oberlin gave Denison a run for its money, but the Big Red were able to pull away with victories of 7-0 and 6-4. Oberlin's record slipped to 1-25 (0-14 NCAC) with the defeats.
The Yeowomen were limited to just two hits in the opener, including a triple by first-year Julia Chauvin. Sophie Simon-Ortiz threw all seven innings for Oberlin in the 0-7 loss, in which the Yeowomen trailed just 0-2 heading into the top of the sixth inning.
In the second game of the day, Denison led just 1-0 after four innings of play. In the top of the fifth, the Big Red pounded out four runs on seven hits to go ahead 5-0. After Denison added a run in the sixth, Oberlin rallied for four runs off four hits and two errors to get to within two at 4-6. The Yeowomen weren't able to threaten in the seventh, though, as the Big Red left Mary Culhane Field with the two-run victory.
Oberlin will play its last two games of the 2007 season on the road on Monday at Cuyahoga Community College. The twinbill at Tri-C is scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m.
