Alie Plotsky and Katie Dover-Taylor Named All-Conference

May 10, 2006 -- Junior Alie Plotsky and senior Katie Dover-Taylor have earned All-NCAC honors for the 2006 season.

Plotsky led the team in conference play with a .306 batting average and an .898 fielding percentage. She had 11 hits, three runs and one RBI. Dover-Tayor carried a .273 batting average for the season, tallying nine hits, three runsand two RBI in conference action.

Softball Wraps Up 2006 Season Against Case Western Reserve

May 1, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team dropped two games to Case Western Reserve University in non-conference action on Monday evening.

In game one, the Yeowomen fell 9-1. The team's only run came in the top of the fifth, when senior Sarah Johnson walked, setting up Miriam Elfstrom. Elfstrom laid down a bunt to the third base side and reached first, advancing Johnson. Ashley Gorham got to first on an error by the shortstop. First-year Becky Goldring hit a sacrifice fly to left field and scored Johnson. Goldring went 2-3 in the game with the team's only RBI. First-year Michelle Zanni took the loss for Oberlin, pitching four innings, giving up 14 hits and nine runs.

Yeowomen Play Final Home Game of the Season

April 29, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team faced Wittenberg University in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon. The team dropped game one 7-0 and game two 12-1.

In game one, first-year Michelle Zanni took the loss, giving up 14 hits and seven runs in seven innings.

Game two was held at 4-1 until the top of the sixth, when the Tigers posted eight runs on five hits. Oberlin's one run came in the bottom of the second when senior Katie Dover-Taylor singled to center field. Senior Kate Oberg laid down a sacrifice bunt that sent Dover-Taylor to second. Senior Miriam Elfstrom singled to left field and scored Dover-Taylor. Oberg took the loss for the Yeowomen, pitching six innings. She gave up 13 hits and had three strikeouts.

Oberlin will play their final game of the season on Monday when they face Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m.

Softball Battles It Out Against Blue Streaks

April 24, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team dropped two games to John Carroll University in non-conference action on Monday evening.

In game one, the Yeowomen were held scoreless until the fourth. With two outs in the top of the inning, sophomore Spencer McCaffrey hit a double and then advanced to third on and error by the center fielder. Senior captain Katie Dover-Taylor singled and scored McCaffrey. Despite the effort, Oberlin was unable to post any more runs, as the game ended in five innings with a final of 9-1. First-year pitcher Michelle Zanni took the loss, striking out three and giving up 11 hits.

Down two in the top of the third of game two, the Yeowomen capitalized on a couple of Blue Streak miscues. To start off the inning, John Carroll's pitching staff walked the first two batters, Ashley Gorham and Becky Goldring. Gorham later advanced to third on a wild pitch, and McCaffrey singled, driving in both runners. Oberlin was able to score one more run in the top of the sixth as McCaffrey scored off of a past ball. She ended the game with two runs and two RBI. The final score after seven innings was John Carroll 9, Oberlin 3. Senior pitcher Kate Oberg took the loss, striking out five and giving up six earned runs.

Oberlin will play their final home game on Saturday when they host Wittenberg University. The teams take the field at 1:00 p.m.

Ladies Down Yeowomen

April 22, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team traveled to Gambier, Ohio and dropped a pair of games to Kenyon College on Saturday afternoon. 

In game one, first-year pitcher Michelle Zanni allowed only four runs in the first five innings, but the Kenyon bats caught fire the Ladies scored four in the sixth to seal the game.  Kenyon’s Stephanie Hemmingson pitched a no-hitter through six innings in the win. 

In game two, Kenyon continued it’s strong offensive effort scoring five runs in the first inning.  The Yeowomen tried to rally in the sixth as senior Miriam Elfstrom singled and advanced to third after a sacrifice out and a wild pitch.  With one out, first-year Rebecca Goldring put the ball in play leading to Elfstrom being thrown out at home plate.  In the seventh frame, Oberlin would knock on the door again.  With junior Alie Plotsky reaching third and sophomore Spencer McCaffrey on second, the Yeowomen were unable to push any runners across the plate.  Kate Oberg struck out four batters in the loss.

Oberlin falls to 3-24 on the season and 1-11 in NCAC play.  The Yeowomen will travel to University Heights, Ohio to face John Carroll University in a double header on Monday, April 24th with the first pitch being thrown at 3:30.

Softball Shuts Out Hiram in Game Two of Conference Doubleheader

April 18, 2006 ---The Oberlin softball team continued NCAC action today, splitting a doubleheader with Hiram College. The Yeowomen lost the first game 6-2 but won the second 2-0.

In game one, Michelle Zanni took the loss for Oberlin, going seven innings and allowing six runs on twelve hits.

Spencer McCaffrey paced the Yeowomen attack, going 1-for-3 at the plate with two runs batted in.

In the second game of the twin bill, the two teams remained scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning. Junior shortstop Alie Plotsky reached first on a fielder’s choice, and advanced to second on an error by the shortstop off of a Katie Dover-Taylor hit. First-year Ruth Allanbrook drove in Plotsky and Dover-Taylor later scored on a balk. The Terriers tried to mount a comeback in the top of the seventh with a runner on second and two outs, but sophomore left fielder Ashley Gorham made a diving grab and the put the game to rest.

Kate Oberg was dominant on the mound, blanking the Terriers on six hits in a complete game victory.

"Everything worked for us today," Head Coach Adrienne Davis said. "Our offense and our defense really clicked, and I'm pleased with the way that we played in both games."

Oberlin will be back on the diamond on Thursday when it hosts Tiffin University at 3:30 p.m.

Yeowomen Fall to Big Red

April 15, 2006 ---The Yeowomen softball team dropped a pair of games in Delaware, OH against Ohio Wesleyan University on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, Oberlin was shutout by a final score of 10-0 despite a strong performance at the plate by junior Alie Plotsky who went one for two. First-year Michelle Zanni recorded the loss in five innings of work.

In game number two, senior Kate Oberg struck out three batters, but it wasn’t enough as the Bishops beat the Yeowomen 8-1. Sophomore Spencer McCaffrey went 1-3 with an RBI and Plotsky scored the team’s only run.

Oberlin will take the field again on Tuesday, April 18th at home against the Hiram Terriers at 3:30 p.m.

Softball Defeated by Allegheny

April 11, 2006 ---The Yeowomen dropped two games on Tuesday evening against the Allegheny Gators. Game one ended 14-0, while game two was 8-0.

In game one, first-year pitcher Michelle Zanni took the loss. She gave up 13 hits and walked three in five innings of play. Junior shortstop Alie Plotsky went 1-2 in the loss.

Senior pitcher Kate Oberg started the second game, giving up 10 hits and one walk in five innings. Plotsky and sophomore Spencer McCaffrey were both 1-2.

Oberlin is now 2-17 overall and 0-6 in conference. The team travels to Delaware, Ohio on Saturday to take on the Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan. The game is set for 1:00 p.m.

Fighting Scots Too Much for Yeowomen

April 5, 2006 ---In their first conference game of the season, the Oberlin softball team saw a strong hitting performance against an aggressive Wooster offense, falling 13-4 and 11-1 in a twinbill with the Fighting Scots.

Wooster jumped out to the early lead scoring three runs in the top half of the first inning.  The Yeowomen answered back with a single from first-year Becky Goldring.  Junior Allie Plotsky drove in Goldring on a single.  Senior Katie Dover-Taylor hit a double that scored Plotsky. 

After three more runs in the second and fourth innings, Oberlin was down 9-3. Dover-Taylor singled to get the offense started in the fourth.  Ruth Allenbrook reached first on an error by the third baseman. Sophomore Ashley Gorham knocked both Dover-Taylor and Goldring in with shot to center field.

Kate Oberg took the loss for the Yeowomen, surrendering thirteen runs, nine earned, in five innings of work.

In the second contest, Oberlin scored their only run on a shot by Dover-Taylor in the bottom of the third.

First-year Michelle Zanni took the loss. She pitched all seven innings, giving up five runs on fifteen hits.

Oberlin will continue North Coast Athletic Conference play on the road this weekend. The Yeowomen will play a doubleheader with Denison on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

Softball Drops One Game to Baldwin-Wallace

April 3, 2006 --- The Oberlin College softball team fell to Baldwin-Wallace College, 3-0, in non-conference action this afternoon. The second game was called due to rain in the third inning.

Senior Kate Oberg pitched all seven innings, striking out three and giving up two runs. Sophomore Spencer McCaffrey and first-year Leah Pine would be the only two to reach base in the game.

"We had a great defensive effort today," Head Coach Adrienne Davis said. "It was just a solid defensive game, but we struggled at the plate."

The Yeomen will play their first conference game on Wednesday when they host the College of Wooster. The doubleheader is set for 3:30 p.m.

Yeowomen Wrap Up at Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

March 31, 2006 -- The softball team concluded their spring break trip with a doubleheader. In the first game Oberlin faced Colby College for the second time on the trip.

Oberlin was lead by Becky Goldring who crushed a double to left field. Senior Kate Oberg pitched well striking out two. But it wasn’t enough, as Colby College pulled away with an 8-0 win.

In the second game the Yeowomen faced off against Luther College. Katie Dover-Tayler and Alie Plotsky lead the offense with a hit apiece, and Michelle Zanni gave up only two earned runs in seven innings, striking out four. But once again it wasn’t enough to overcome five unearned runs. Luther won the game by a final score of 7-0.

The Yeowomen will return to Oberlin this weekend and will face off against Baldwin-Wallace in Berea, Ohio on April 3 at 3:30 p.m.

Softball Picks Up First Road Win

March 30, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team defeated Fredonia College 7-5 in game two of the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic this afternoon. The team fell to UW-Whitewater 15-1 earlier in the day.

Oberlin rallied in the fourth, scoring six runs off of a lead off single by first-year Becky Goldring. Senior Kate Oberg picked up the win for Oberlin, striking out three and only giving up two earned runs. The Yeowomen offense was led by first-year Ruth Allanbrook who went 2-4, and senior Miriam Elfstrom who was 2-3.

“It feels good to finally get a win on the road,” Head Coach Adrienne Davis said. “Everything that we’ve been working on all week came together today. Our defense and our offense put up a really solid performance.”

The team will finish out it’s spring break tomorrow morning. They play Colby College at 11:00 a.m. and Luther College at 1:00 p.m.

Yeowomen Looking for a Win Down South

March 28, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team played two games this morning in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The team dropped the first game 4-0 to Thomas College and fell to D'Youville College
9-3.

In game two, sophomore Ashley Gorham went 2-3 with two RBI and two stolen bases.

The Yeowomen will get some much needed rest tomorrow and be back in action on Thursday, March 30. They take on UW-Whitewater at 11:00 a.m. and SUNY Fredonia at 2:00 p.m.

Softball Drops Two in Day Two of Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

March 27, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team fell to Luther College
11-0 in tournament action this morning. The team also dropped a game to DePauw University with a final score of 7-1.

Junior Alie Plotsky scored the team's only run off a past ball.

The Yeowomen will be back on the field tomorrow as they face D'Youville College at 9:00 a.m. and Thomas College at 11:00 a.m.

Yeowomen Shut Out in Opener of Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic

March 26, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team dropped two games on Sunday afternoon. In the first game against Gustavus Adolphus College, the Yeowomen fell 8-0 in five innings. The team lost to Whitewater College 11-0 in the second game of the day.

Yeowomen Score 13 Runs to Split Season Opener

March 23, 2006 -- The Oberlin College softball team finally kicked off their 2006 season by splitting a pair of games with Thiel College. The Yeowomen dropped the first game 9-6, but outlasted the Tomcats in the second with a 7-6 victory.

In the pivotal fifth inning of the second game, sophomore Spencer McCaffrey
ignited a rally with a triple to center field. First-year Ruth Allanbrook laid down a bunt for a base hit, and on an infield error, both McCaffrey and Allanbrook scored to give the Yeowomen all they would need to win the game.

It was a big night for two players making the Oberlin debuts. Becky Goldring and Ruth Allanbrook each knocked one of the park. Goldring picked up three rbi's, while Allanbrook drove in two runs.

"It was really encouraging to come out an play the way that we did," Head Coach Adrienne Davis said. "Thiel had 14 games under their belt and for us to put up solid performances in both games is something our players be really proud of."

First-year Michelle Zanni got her first career start on the mound. In a complete game effort, the rookie had three strikeouts and one walk. In the second game, senior Kate Oberg struck out five in her first victory of the season.

Oberlin heads to Fort Meyers, Florida for the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. The team will be back in action at home on April 5 at 3:30 p.m. against The College of Wooster.
