April 1 – The Oberlin College men’s tennis team remained unblemished in North Coast Athletic Conference play as they defeated The College of Wooster 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.
“This was a huge win for us, especially having it come against a team from our side of the conference,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “This will surely help come seeding time for the conference tournament and it is always a good feeling to knockoff a regionally-ranked team like Wooster.”
Oberlin (7-5, 3-0 NCAC) dropped two of three doubles matches to fall behind early, but Ben Godlove and Leo Sprinzen prevented the sweep in the No. 2 meeting as they topped Dave Albrechta and Ethan Arenstein by an 8-5 count.
Chris Pray earned a team-best ninth victory of the season as he bested Albrechta by winning back-to-back sets by a score of 6-2 in the No. 1 singles match-up.
Tom Page was able to outlast Pat Grab in No. 3 action – winning 7-5 and 6-3.
Godlove improved his record to 8-3 overall and 4-0 in the No. 4 slot as he topped Jeremy Dominik in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4.
With the match still very much in doubt, first-year Leo Sprinzen came through in convincing fashion as he easily handled Arenstein 6-1, 6-4 to secure the win for Oberlin.
Wooster, which came into the match ranked No. 18 in the Central Region, is now 5-6 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Oberlin will be back in action on Sunday, April 6, at Allegheny College. Doubles play is slated to being at 1 p.m.
