March 28 – The Oberlin College men’s tennis team finished their spring break trip to Hilton Head, S.C. in fine fashion this afternoon defeating University of Sioux Falls 6-3.
Oberlin performed well on the courts today getting the win over Sioux Falls, an NAIA national tournament qualifying team from a year ago. The Yeomen took four of six singles slots and two of three doubles match-ups to earn their sixth win of the season.
Tom Page and Ben Godlove each worked hard in earning victories in the No. 3 and No. 4 singles slots. They both earned third set victories to put Oberlin in the driver’s seat. Page bested Michael Anderson 6-4, 5-7, 6-4. Godlove improved his season record to 7-3 by downing Michel-Olivier Marcoux 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Chris Pray, the Yeomen No. 1, handed Braden Bradfield a loss winning a tight second set 7-5 after defeating Bradfield 6-2 in the opener. Colin Burling notched another win as he easily defeated Sioux Falls’ Austin DeLange 6-1, 6-2.
Head coach Adam Shoemaker noted, “These four performances, especially Tom and Ben’s wins, gave us the momentum and carried us through the match against a good team.”
The Yeomen sealed the victory with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Burling and Pray took down Bradfield and Marcoux 8-4. While David Midler and partner Leo Sprinzen added the final win 8-2 over Codie Schmeichel and Nolan Wiese.
“The trip to Hilton Head was a good opportunity for the guys to play some matches outdoors against good teams and the experience should help to prepare us for a couple of conference matches on the road during the first week of April,” said coach Shoemaker.
Oberlin (6-5) travels to The College of Wooster on April 1 and then to Allegheny College April 6.
