February 28 – It came down to the very end, but the Oberlin College men’s tennis team found themselves on the wrong side of a 5-4 decision against Mount Union College on Thursday night.
“We had a lot of guys step up and play well tonight,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “It just came down to a few points, which we dropped in some key situations.”
It all came down to the No. 5 match between the Oberlin’s Peter Meckel and Brain Belconis of Mount Union as they were the last pair to finish. Meckel, who was making his first appearance of the spring, gave Belconis all he could handle throughout the match but dropped the first set 6-3. However, in the second and most pivotal set of the match Meckel pushed Belconis to the brink before falling 7-6 (10-8) in a tiebreak.
The Purple Raiders (4-1) took two of three doubles matches as Oberlin’s No. 1 tandem of Chris Pray and Colin Burling dropped a hard-fought 9-8 (11-9) dual against Zach Perry and Jimmy Jefferies.
David Midler and Leo Sprinzen combined to defeat Kevin Kreighbau and Chase Thomas in No. 3 doubles, but Ezra Goldman and Ben Godlove lost an 8-6 decision to Travis Papay and Belconis.
In No. 1 singles action, Pray improved his record to 5-2 on the year as he defeated Perry in straight sets by the count of 6-3, 6-3.
Midler also stayed red hot with his third-consecutive victory as he bested Brian Mogus 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 2 slot.
OC (2-2) dropped matches three through five, but Leo Sprinzen claimed victory in the sixth position as he topped Jeffries 6-4, 6-4.
The Yeomen will jump back into conference action on Saturday when they travel south to take on the Battling Bishops of Ohio Wesleyan. All the action is set to begin at 6 p.m.
