February 16 – The Oberlin College men’s tennis team swept the round of doubles to help lift themselves past Malone College on Saturday afternoon at the John W. Heisman Field House.
“This was a good result for us in our first match back,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “Everyone stepped up and played well. I was especially happy to see that we took all three doubles matches as they guys have recommitted themselves to excel in doubles competition this season.”
One of Oberlin’s top doubles players, Colin Burling, teamed-up with Chris Pray to make short work (8-3) of the Pioneers’ Jason Christman and Kyle Bowers. In the No. 2 doubles match, junior David Midler and first-year Leo Sprinzen defeated Nathaniel Rodd and Tim Springirth 8-4. In the third and final doubles dual, Ben Godlove and Thomas Page topped David Cairns and Tim Frazier in a hard-fought 8-6 match.
Oberlin’s No. 1 Chris Pray had no trouble with Christman – disposing of him 6-2, 6-4.
The Yeomen dropped the second and third matches, but responded with wins in matches four through six.
Godlove brought home the clincher for Oberlin as he bested Rodd 6-4, 6-0 to guarantee the victory.
Making his collegiate debut in singles, Sprinzen showed his tenacity against Springirth – winning 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
In the No. 6 slot, Burling split the first two sets against Yard (6-1, 4-6), but responded to win the super-tiebreak 10-8.
The Yeomen will have a pair of home contests next weekend when they welcome Case Western Reserve to town for a 1 p.m. meeting on Saturday (Feb. 23) and follow that up with their first conference match of the season against Wittenberg on Sunday at noon. |
