March 8 – Hope College took two of three doubles matches and won the first four battles on the singles court as it defeated the Oberlin College men’s tennis team by the count of 6-3 on Saturday morning.

“This was a tough a match against a very good team,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “Their No .1 player [John Pelton] is ranked sixth in the region and they have some other good players on their team as well.”

Oberlin’s No. 1 doubles pairing of Colin Burling and Chris Pray fell to Pelton and John Gardner 8-3. John Schlotz/Zach Huber followed suite with a 8-4 victory over Ezra Goldman and Ben Godlove.

The Yeomen did claim victory in No. 3 doubles as David Midler and Leo Sprinzen held off Brandon King and Zach Hoernschemeyer in hard-fought 9-7 victory.

Oberlin (3-3) won the final two singles matches as Sprinzen used all three sets to defeat King 7-6 (7-1), 1-6, 6-3 in the No. 5 slot. Godlove also had no trouble handling Jeff Vredenburg in the six position as he was victorious 6-2, 6-1.

Oberlin was slated to play John Carroll University later today at 4 p.m., but due to the weather that match has been canceled. No make-up date has been set.

The Yeomen will now return to the court on March 11, at home, against Grove City College. Doubles action will get underway at 5 p.m.
