March 24 – The Oberlin College men’s tennis team started their Spring Break trip with a tough challenge as they fell to Carleton College 7-2 on Monday afternoon.
“Carleton is very good team that has a lot of nice players on it,” head coach Adam Shoemaker said. “However, we didn’t really play our best tennis today, and I feel we should have given them a lot closer match.”
Chris Pray took the first set 6-2 against the No. 16 ranked player in the region, Colin Russell, but the Knights’ No. 1 performer responded by winning the next two sets 6-1 and 6-2.
Ben Godlove garnered the only individual win for Oberlin (5-4) as he defeated Jordan Hughes 6-4, 3-6, and 10-5.
Godlove also partnered with Tom Page to top Vince Heguy and Eirik Thoen 8-6 in the No. 3 doubles match-up.
Russell and teammate Winston Park are the 11th best doubles duo in the central region and they made short work Pray and Colin Burling by an 8-1 count in the No. 1 meeting.
David Midler and Leo Sprinzen also had their seven-match winning streak snapped as they fell to Julian Tokarev and Brendan Cooper 8-4 in No. 2 doubles action.
Oberlin will return to the courts tomorrow morning with an 8 a.m. match against Colby College.
