Yeomen Continue to Roll, Defeat Washington and Jefferson, 4-0

September 8, 2007 -- The men's soccer squad continued its domination of the competition this season by blanking non-conference foe Washington and Jefferson this afternoon, 4-0. The Yeomen earned the win in the first game of the Allegheny College Tournament in Meadville, Pa. Tomorrow, Oberlin will face the Rochester Institute of Technology at 12:30 p.m.

With the win, the Yeomen improved to 3-0-1 on the young year, while Washington and Jefferson slipped to 1-2-0. Although Oberlin kept the Presidents out of the goal for all 90 minutes, but they were actually out-shot 7-12, scoring on nearly 60 percent of their opportunities. Junior forward Luke Hoffman, who has already scored four goals this season, scored the first goal of the game, which would eventually prove to the game-winner, off an assist from first-year Chris Campbell. Campbell's shot was saved, but Hoffman picked up the rebound and knocked it in for a score.

It would be over 30 minutes before Oberlin would strike again, with sophomore Skyler Dum scoring off an assist from Hoffman at the 60:22 mark. Just a minute later, Dum booted in another goal off a nice cross from junior Zach Lewis. Campbell added an insurance goal 68:50 into the contest courtesy of a cross through busy traffic from first-year Evan Atwell.

Goalkeepers Zach Lipshultz (75:14 of action) and Max Phinney (14:46) combined for the shutout win. Washington and Jefferson's starting keeper, Tyler Hodgins, had two saves in 75:14 of work.
