-- Despite controlling the game, the Oberlin men’s soccer team found itself in a 1-1 tie with 20 minutes left in their match against Muskingum College today. The Yeomen responded as senior co-captain Sam Zackheim knocked in what was the winning goal following a throw-in at the 75th minute. The Yeomen would add one more goal to secure the 3-1 victory improving their record to 5-2-2, while the Muskies drop to 4-4.
The teams battled to a 0-0 half-time score as the Yeomen struggled to finish on their scoring opportunities. In the second half Oberlin started a bit slow but heated up putting pressure on the Muskingum defense. The Yeomen created several dangerous scoring chances after creating turnovers by the Muskies defense but Oberlin was failing to connect on some of their long balls.
Mid-way through the second half sophomore Skyler Dum played a beautiful ball to first-year Chris Campbell. Campbell ran onto the pass and got behind the defense, then slammed the ball into the corner of the goal. Muskingum would respond with a goal five minutes later when the Yeomen defense failed to clear the ball and first-year Heath Zealer’s shot found the back of the net.
Oberlin kept up the pressure and retook the lead on Zackheim’s goal. In the 83rd minute junior Luke Hoffman converted on a breakaway to secure the Yeomen’s victory.
The Yeomen out shot Muskingum 21 to 13, while the Muskies had eight corner kicks to Oberlin’s five. Junior goalkeeper Derrick Bean recorded four saves in the win, while sophomore Chris Limle had five saves for the visiting side.
North Coast Athletic Conference competition begins for Oberlin against Allegheny College on September 25 at 4:30 p.m. at Fred Shults Field.
