With less than seven minutes remaining in the 1-1 tied
match between the Oberlin men’s soccer team and
Wittenberg University, junior John Lindner controlled
an unsettled the ball in the box and slammed in the
game winning goal for the Yeomen. The come from
behind victory boosts the Yeomen’s record to
7-5-3 (2-3-1), while the Tigers drop to 9-3-2 (3-1-1).
The win was an important one for the Yeomen as they
are in the midst the heart of NCAC competition and
are vying for post-season position. Oberlin handed
Wittenberg, ranked 14th in the nation coming into the
game, their first NCAC lost of the season.
The Tigers struck first in the 50th minute after an
attempted clear by junior goalkeeper Derrick Bean ricocheted
off a Wittenberg player leaving junior Anthony Ianiro
an empty net on which to score. The Tigers would
get another scoring chance moments later, but Bean
came up with a tremendous break away save. Oberlin
would answer minutes later in the 53rd with an impressive
unassisted goal by sophomore Skyler Dum who dribbled
past several defenders and drilled the ball into the
lower corner, scoring his third goal of the season.
As overtime loomed near, Linder secured the victory
with his first goal of the season. The Yeomen
were able to withstand several Wittenberg runs including
a six-yard shot that just sailed over the goalpost.
Bean had an excellent game in goal making five saves
including several important saves in the second half. He
was effective on cutting down angles on breakaways
and rushing Wittenberg shots.
The Yeomen took nine shots while the Tigers had 12,
Dum lead Oberlin with three shots in the game. Oberlin
had a 5 to 3 edge in corner kicks. Senior goalkeeper
Ben McAnnis-Entenman made four saves for Wittenberg.
NCAC play continues for Oberlin at Hiram College on
Oct. 20 at 2:00 p.m.
