Despite Late Surge, Yeomen Fall to Case Western Reserve, 2-3
Zackheim nets goal in game's final seconds, but officials rule time had expired

September 19, 2007 -- After 45 minutes of play, few in attendance might have expected the flurry of scoring that was about to occur in the second half of tonight's men's soccer game between Oberlin and Case Western Reserve. The host Spartans scored three unanswered goals to open up the second half, and then the Yeomen responded with two goals in the game's final five minutes. It wasn't quite enough to lift Oberlin past Case, though, as the Spartans remained undefeated (6-0-0) with the 3-2 non-conference win. The Yeomen fell to 4-2-2 with the defeat.

Case's Neal Duryea started off the scoring off a penalty kick 59:44 into the contest. Justin Steggerda added another score 78 minutes into the game and teammate Matt Paglia put the Spartans up 3-0 after a double-assisted goal with just under nine minutes left to play.

Senior Sam Zackheim put an end to Case's shutout after he converted on a penalty kick with 4:51 remaining in the contest. Junior Luke Hoffman, the Yeomen's leading scorer this season with seven goals on the year, then chipped in a score with just 35 seconds left in the match off an assist from first-year Chris Campbell. As time expired, the Yeomen put together a brilliant potential scoring strike as Zackheim kicked a shot into the net. The officials ruled that the shot had come after time expired, though. That play, and another in which the Spartans scored off a questionable throw-in, have caused the game to be under review.

Oberlin was out-shot 4-22 in a physical game that featured a combined 31 fouls between the Spartans and Yeomen. First-year Zach Lipshultz saved eight shots for Oberlin after playing all 90 minutes in goal.

The Yeomen will look to get back into the win column when they host Muskingum College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
