Men's Soccer Defeats Wooster, 1-0

October 14, 2006 -- The men's soccer team earned a huge North Coast Athletic Conference win this afternoon against The College of Wooster. As the 2006 season winds down and the Yeomen fight to return to the conference playoffs, Oberlin downed the Fighting Scots, 1-0, to improve to 6-4-4 overall and 3-2-1 in the NCAC. Wooster fell to 8-3-1 (2-2-1 NCAC) with the loss.

On a beautiful fall day in Oberlin, Head Coach Blake New's Yeomen out-performed and out-scored visiting Wooster. Oberlin scored just 10 minutes into the contest, thanks to a goal by senior tri-captain Zachary Tesler. The score by Tesler was his fourth goal and first game-winner of the 2006 campaign.

Senior goalkeeper Clayton Combe notched his fifth shutout of the season with the 1-0 victory. The tri-captain also saved three shots en route to the win. Other top performers for Oberlin today were junior midfielder Sam Zackheim, who tallied five shots, and sophomore Luke Hoffman, who played very well in his first career start.

For the game, Oberlin out-shot Wooster 14-10 and held a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. Wooster goalkeeper Erik Larson saved four shots.

"I thought we played very well today," New said. "We came out in the second half with a game plan and executed it just as we wanted to."

Oberlin will visit Kenyon College on October 21 at 3:30 p.m. for its next contest.
