by Erik Kojola '09

September 23, 2006 -- The Oberlin College men’s soccer team pulled out a 3-1 victory over visiting Westminster College (Pa.) this afternoon.  The Yeomen overcame an early one-goal deficit to soundly defeat the Titans, as Oberlin’s second win a row improved Oberlin’s record to 3-2-3.

Westminister struck first in the 23rd minute after a free-kick was blocked and the rebound was put in the back of the net by senior Todd Atwood. However, Oberlin would keep up the pressure and answer seven minutes later with a goal of its own by junior Sam Zackheim, which was assisted by sophomore Michael Mullaley on a wonderful corner kick.  The Yeomen were not done and would score again before the half was over.  Senior Tettah Morton put in what would be the game-winning goal in the 42nd minute.

In the second half, Oberlin maintained its up-tempo play to add to its lead.  In the 61st minute, sophomore Luke Hoffman scored off an assist from classmate Zachary Lewis to cushion the lead.  The Oberlin defense held the Titan attack in check and coasted to the two-goal victory.  The Titans’ attempt to comeback was limited by the ejection of Atwood in the 59th minute for his second yellow card of the game. leaving Westminster a man down.

The Yeomen created several scoring opportunities, racking up 12 shots, while Westminister managed five.  Oberlin also had six corner kicks, one of which they scored on, while the Titans had only three.

Oberlin will next be in action against  Hiram College on September 26 at 4:30 pm, which will be the Yeomen’s first North Coast Athletic Conference match of the season.
