Yeomen Muzzle Terriers for 3-1 NCAC Win

September 26, 2006 -- The Oberlin men's soccer team won its third straight contest this afternoon, soundly defeating North Coast Athletic Conference opponent Hiram College, 3-1. Today's game was the first conference contest for both teams, and the Yeomen prevailed over a strong Terrier squad. Hiram entered the game at 7-1 overall and never led against Oberlin, who improved to 4-2-3 overall and 1-0 in the NCAC with the victory.

Junior midfielder Sam Zackheim scored twice today to increase his team-leading point total to nine (four goals, one assist). Sophomore Michael Mullaley scored a goal and passed for an assist today, while first-year forward Skyler Dum assisted Zackheim's first goal of the game.

Oberlin and Hiram battled to a 1-1 tie at the intermission, with Zackheim scoring the hosts' first goal and Hiram's Kelsey Resnick tallying the Terriers' only goal of the game.

In the second half, Zackheim notched the game-winner 16 minutes into the period off an assist from Dum. Mullaley added an insurance goal later in the period off a free kick.

Senior goalkeeper Clayton Combe and the Oberlin defense were again solid this afternoon, allowing only six shot attempts by the Terriers. Oberlin accumulated 13 shots on the day.

For the year, Combe had allowed only eight goals in nine games and over 840 minutes of action. The tri-captain has saved 34 shots and registered three shutouts.

Oberlin will hit the road this week and next for two consecutive NCAC contests. On Saturday, Sept. 30, the Yeomen will voyage to Wittenberg University for a 7:00 p.m. game, while they will travel to Allegheny College on Tuesday, Oct. 3.
