-- The Oberlin College men’s soccer team tied Denison University 0-0 in a tightly played double-overtime North Coast Athletic Conference match this afternoon. The tie keeps the Yeomen’s hopes for making the NCAC playoffs alive as their conference record is 4-2-2 and 7-4-5 overall. The Big Red are 9-4-1 and 6-1 in the NCAC.
The game was evenly and competitively played by both teams. Defensively, Oberlin played strong and got a big help from senior co-captain and goalkeeper Clayton Combe, who had six saves. The shutout was Combe’s seventh on the season. Oberlin recorded 13 shots while Denison had 16 as both teams created multiple scoring opportunities. Junior Sam Zackheim took three shots in the game. The Yeomen had three corner kicks while the Big Red had five.
Oberlin has played strongly during conference play with three wins, one tie and one loss in its past five games that have all been against NCAC opponents. This late season surged has helped keep the Yeomen in playoff contention.
The Yeomen have their last regular season game at Wabash College (Ind.) on October 28 at 11:00 am. Oberlin’s playoffs hopes will depend on their wining and the results of several NCAC games in the coming week.
