Oberlin and Case Western Reserve Battle to Double-Overtime 0-0 Tie

September 14, 2006 -- Oberlin welcomed Case Western Reserve University this evening for a non-conference men's soccer showdown. The Spartans entered the game undefeated at 4-0, while the Yeomen were looking to rise above the .500 mark. Both teams battled evenly throughout the contest, but two periods of regulation and a pair of overtimes weren't enough to settle the score. After the double-overtime 0-0 tie, Oberlin's record now stands at 1-1-3.

The Yeomen and Spartans finished today's contest nearly even in just about every statistical category. Oberlin had 13 shots on the day, while Case Reserve put together 15 shot attempts. Both teams had six corner kicks for the game.

Senior tri-captain Zach Tesler had perhaps Oberlin's best two shots at putting the ball into the net. Tesler nearly missed on a breakaway early in the first period and hit the crossbar on attempt in the second half.

Case's Matt Paglia nearly scored the game-winner as time expired in regulation, but a spectacular save by senior tri-captain Clayton Combe kept the Spartans off the scoreboard.

Tesler had a team-best three shots for the Yeomen, while Paglia and Justin Steggerda both had three shots for the visitors. Combe tallied seven saves in the contest and Case Reserve's Chad Skidmore saved five shots.

Said Head Coach Blake New, "It was an entertaining game today and both teams played very well. Sooner or later, the goals are going to start to fall for us."

Oberlin will travel to Muskingum College on Saturday for a non-conference game slated to begin at 3:30 p.m.
