-- The Oberlin men’s soccer team traveled to Anderson University this afternoon for the second straight non-conference road contest. Despite out-shooting the Ravens 17-10 and winning the corner kick advantage 12-3, Oberlin couldn’t quite muster up enough offense to pick up the win. The Yeomen slid to 1-1-2 with the defeat, while Anderson’s record jumped to 3-2.
For the third straight game, Oberlin certainly played well enough to win. In their previous two games, the Yeomen claimed double-overtime ties against Heidelberg and Mount Union. This afternoon, Oberlin was forced to play catch up in the second half after heading into halftime with a 0-2 deficit. After a brilliant save by senior tri-captain Clayton Combe, Anderson scored off the rebound to take a 1-0 lead in the opening period and gain momentum for the remainder of the half.
The Yeomen held the advantage in both the possession and scoring in the second period. Senior tri-captain Zach Tesler put Oberlin onto the scoreboard on an unassisted goal 70 minutes into the contest. A stingy Anderson defense was able to hold onto the home victory in the last 20 minutes.
“The game started off well for us, but it took us a while to regain control of the game after Anderson’s opening goal,” Head Coach Blake New said. “We held a 2-1 margin in shot attempts, had 12 corner kicks to their three, and shut them out for the second half, so there were certainly plenty of positives for us to build upon.”
Combe registered five saves today for the Yeomen, who will host Case Western Reserve University on Sept. 14 at 5:00 p.m.
