--- The men's and women's soccer squads have received the Team Academic Award by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.
The award was given to those teams who posted a grade point average of 3.0 or higher. Oberlin was one of 48 teams that had both their men's and women's team make the list.
--- The NSCAA/adidas All-America Committee has named senior David Wilson to the Great Lakes Region second team.
The forward had a standout season with eight goals. He's notched 23 goals and has had eight assists in a four-year career in Oberlin. Wilson also earned a spot on the All-NCAC First Team.
--- The Oberlin College Board of Trustees has approved construction of a new stadium for athletics and recreation. The outdoor facility, which will include a running track and a soccer and lacrosse field, was made possible by a lead gift from Robert Kahn ’55.
Construction of the facility will begin in the spring of 2006. An eight-lane track will surround the soccer and lacrosse field. Seating for 1,000 spectators and a press box are also being considered. The running facility will be known as the Robert Kahn Track, while the soccer and lacrosse field will be named after long-time Oberlin coach Fred Shults '54. Richard Bailey ’51 has donated the funding for the soccer and lacrosse field.
"This new venue is coming at the perfect time," Head Coach Blake New said. "As we are breaking through to the top of the conference, this is just going to propel us into that next level. Not only will this provide a better playing atmosphere, but it will also allow us to get the Oberlin community more involved with athletics."
--- David Wilson, Sam Zackheim and Evan Childress have landed spots on the 2005 All-NCAC first team for men's soccer. Clayton Combe was selected second team, while Montgomery Lobe and Kyle Taljan made honorable mention.
Wilson, a senior forward from Beaver, Pennsylvania, racked up eight goals and an assist this season this season. Zackheim, a sophomore midfielder from Portland, Oregon, added six goals and two assists of his own. Childress, a senior defender from Free Union, Virginia, had one goal.
Combe, a junior goalkeeper from Granville, Ohio, had 79 saves and five shutouts this season. This marks the first All-NCAC selection for Combe.
Head Coach Blake New was named North Coast's Coach of the Year. New's 2005 squad finished the year with a 9-7-2 overall record and a 6-2-1 record in the NCAC. The team finished the regular season in second place and earned its first berth in the NCAC tournament.
--- The 2005 season came to an end for the Oberlin College men's soccer team as the Yeomen lost 1-0 to Allegheny College in the North Coast Athletic Conference tournament semi-final.
The Gators (8-7-4 overall, 5-7-1 NCAC) scored the game-winning goal with 25:58 in the first half. The shot came off of a header from junior Alan Carr. For the match, Allegheny held a 10-6 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Yeomen goalkeeper Clayton Combe made five saves in the effort, while Gator goalie Brian Manougian tallied five for the shutout
“We played our hearts out, but we just didn’t get it done,” Head Coach Blake New said. “ It was a great season, and we’ve got to hold our heads high because we’ve done something that no other Oberlin soccer team has done.”
This was the first time since Oberlin has been in the NCAC that they’ve made the tournament. This is the second straight year for Allegheny to make it to the championship game, which will be played on
November 5.

--- Oberlin College men’s soccer prevailed over Earlham College 1-0 on Saturday in their final NCAC regular season game.
Sophomore Sam Zackheim scored his sixth goal of the season. The shot came after a six- pass build up that crossed over to the corner, setting up Zackheim. The double assist was given to first-year Zach Lewis and senior Josh Treuhaft. This is Zackheim's fourth game-winning goal of the season.
“This was just a great win for us,” Head Coach Blake New said. “Now, we can’t be happy enough to get to the tournament. We have to prepare to win this.”
The squad finished the season with an overall record of 9-7-2 and 6-2-1 in the conference. Oberlin finished second, just behind Ohio Wesleyan University. The Yeomen will host #3 seed Allegheny College in the first round of the NCAC semi-finals on Wednesday, November 2 at 1:30 p.m.

--- Oberlin College men's soccer held nationally ranked Ohio Wesleyan scoreless for 87 minutes on Wednesday, but the Bishops put up two goals with three minutes remaining in the game to defeat the Yeomen 2-0.
Ohio Wesleyan's first goal came with 3:12 remaining in the game. Junior Kevin Lehman would get an assist from Brandon Bianco. Nearly two minutes later, Nick Markovich would score off of a Cole Graham assist. In the effort, Yeomen goalkeeper Clayton Combe tallied 14 saves.
"We played really well, but the score really doesn't reflect the game tonight," Head Coach Blake New said. "Tonight showed that we can play with this team and we're ready to play them again."
The two teams were battling for more than just a win this evening. The NCAC tournament begins next Wednesday, and the top two teams will get home seed advantage. The Yeomen are currently in second place, while Ohio Wesleyan will now finish in the top seed. Oberlin moves to 8-7-2 overall and 5-2-1 in the NCAC. The squad travels to Richmond, Indiana to face Earlham College in their final regular season game.

--- Sophomore Sam Zackheim notched his third game-winning goal of the season as Oberlin College defeated Denison University 1-0 in men's soccer on Saturday afternoon.
Seven minutes into the second half, Zackheim found the net on a corner kick. Senior co-captain David Wilson recorded the assist.
"This felt good," Head Coach Blake New said. "We stuck it out for most of the game, and we'll take the win."
Oberlin moves to 8-6-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the NCAC. The Yeomen host Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.

--- Senior David Wilson’s goal off of an assist by first-year Michael Mullaley was all that Oberlin College would need as they defeated Wabash College 1-0 Saturday afternoon.
Wilson’s goal was scored with 9:43 left in the first half, but the word of the day for Oberlin was control. The Yeomen controlled the ball throughout, with 17 shots to the Little Giants' three. Wabash, clearly frustrated, had four yellow cards thrown their way.
“We played well today,” Head Coach Blake New said. “We’ve just got to knock in those goals to make it easier on ourselves, but this puts us in a good spot right now.”
Oberlin is now 7-6-2 overall and 4-1-1 in the NCAC. The Yeomen will next travel to Denison on Saturday October, 22nd for a 3:30 game.

--- Junior goalkeeper Clayton Combe added another shutout to his record this season as Oberlin College defeated Hiram College 4-0.
The Yeomen scored three of their four goals in the first half. Only twelve seconds into play, senior David Wilson found the net as he scored off of the kickoff. Senior Sebas Costante would score off of an assist from senior Josh Treuhaft, and Treuhaft would go on to score the final goal of the first half unassisted. Wilson would strike again in the second half off of an assist from sophomore Sam Zackheim.
“This was a good victory,” Head Coach Blake New said. “We are starting to click on all cylinders, and it’s good to see it all come together in this offensive explosion.”
Oberlin is now 6-6-2 overall and 3-1-1 in the NCAC. The Yeomen will take on Wabash on Saturday at noon.

--- Wittenberg University narrowly defeated the Oberlin College men's soccer team 2-1 on Saturday afternoon.
In a game played throughout a cold rain, Oberlin came out strong in the first half. David Wilson scored a header off an assist from Sam Zackheim to put the Yeomen up 1-0, a lead they maintained until halftime. The Tigers quickly tied the game in the final 45 minutes and scored the go ahead goal with 8:35 remaining. Though Oberlin was able to create a number of opportunities in the final minutes, they couldn't quite capitalize. The loss marked the first for Oberlin since September 21.
“This one got away,” Head Coach Blake New said. “But a loss doesn't kill us, and we won't let it get to us.”
Oberlin falls to 5-6-2 overall and 2-0-1 in the NCAC. The Yeomen travel to Hiram College for a 4:30 p.m. game on Tuesday.

--- Sophomore Sam Zackheim executed two beautiful headers to score both of the goals for Oberlin College as the Yeomen beat Allegheny 2-1 in men’s soccer on Tuesday afternoon.
The Yeomen controlled the tempo early on but couldn’t capitalize on their opportunities. Zackheim opened the scoring with 5:13 left in the first half by heading a pass from Tim Kovanda into the Allegheny net for a goal. The Yeomen then solidified their lead on another header goal by Zackheim with 41:40 to go in the second half. Up 2-0, the defense for Oberlin went to work, frustrating their opponent’s efforts to make a comeback. Allegheny made a furious effort towards the end of the game, but could only scratch out one goal, and the Yeomen held on for the win.
“Close games are what this conference is all about,” Head Coach Blake New said. “We play well in front and that was our goal today, to get a lead and defend it. Allegheny is one of the better teams in the league, and this was a big win for us.”
The win brings Oberlin up to 5-5-2 on the season. The Yeomen host Wittenberg on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

--- Junior Zach Tesler headed in a corner kick from first-year teammate Zach Lewis with 1:44 remaining as Oberlin College preserved a double overtime draw with Kenyon College in men’s soccer on Saturday.
The Lords opened the scoring at 22:40 when Rubin Miller found the net, spotting Kenyon a 1-0 lead. The Yeomen put on a spirited display over the next 60 minutes without a goal to show for it. Tesler then nabbed the game-tying score with 104 second left in regulation.
“To come back like that and fight to get a tie – we’ll take it,” Head Coach Blake New said. “We need to be a bit hungrier to score, and I thought we did a good job the last several minutes of the game.”
The tie brings Oberlin into October with a 4-5-2 record. The squad hosts Allegheny College on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m.

--- The Oberlin College men's soccer team faced its second nationally-ranked opponent of the season on Saturday at The College Wooster. The Yeomen shutdown the Fighting Scots, ranked 21st in the national Division III poll, 1-0. Oberlin, which drew with 19th ranked Babson College on September 3, is now 1-0-1 against top-25 opponents this season.
On Saturday, the Yeomen’s Sam Zackheim found the back of the net with twelve minutes remaining in the first half. This proved to be the game winning goal. Clayton Comb protected Oberlin's advantage by tallying four saves.
“The thing that I'm most happy about is that we really stuck to our game plan today,” Head Coach Blake New said. “All around, we played really well.”
Oberlin advances to 4-4-1 on the season. The Yeomen take on Mount Union College on their home field, September 28 at 4:30 p.m.

--- Despite Clayton Combe’s five saves, Muskingum College defeated the Oberlin College Yeomen 3 – 0 on Wednesday afternoon.
After a tightly played, scoreless first half, Muskingum quickly put two on the board early in the second period. Muskingum’s third goal came on a breakaway with 3:43 left in the game.
“We talked all pre-season about consistency, and it just wasn’t there for us today,” Head Coach Blake New said.
The loss drops Oberlin to 3-4-1 on the season. On Saturday afternoon the Yeomen head to Wooster, Ohio to face the undefeated The College of Wooster Fighting Scots.

--- Kevin Biggart's hat trick lifted Case Western Reserve University past Oberlin College 3-1 in men's soccer on Tuesday evening.
Biggart opened the scoring at 18:51 of the first half, but the Yeomen responded just over nine minutes later on an Evan Childress unassisted goal. Biggart put the Spartans ahead for good with 55 second left in the first half. Clayton Combe made three saves for Oberlin.
The loss drops the Yeomen to 1-3-1 on the season. Oberlin hosts Bluffton on Thursday at 5:00 p.m.

--- Sam Zackheim and Kyle Taljan scored a goal each as Oberlin College notched their first men’s soccer win of the season, a 2-1 decision at Manchester College.
Zackheim scored off an assist from Noah Streib in the first half, while Taljan scored unassisted in the second half. Oberlin led 2-0 before Manchester found the net with five minutes to play. The Yeomen were able to ride out the rest of the game.
“The weather really affected us,” Head Coach Blake New said. “It was hot and humid out there. We played everyone, so this was a real team victory for us.”
The win moves Oberlin to 1-2-1 on the season. The Yeomen travel to Case Western Reserve on Tuesday for a 5:00 p.m. contest with the Spartans.

-- Karl Eustache broke a 1-1 tie with 1:31 to play as Defiance College downed Oberlin College 2-1 in men's soccer on Sunday afternoon.
The Yeomen took the lead on a David Wilson penalty kick at 17:54 of the first half. Defiance evened the match at 14:19 of the second half on an unassisted goal from Benji Hughes. Eustache, who had threatened Oberlin with four shots on goal, finally found the mark on a breakaway with 91 seconds to play.
Oberlin falls to 0-1-1 on the season. The Yeomen travel to Capital University on September 7th for a 5:15 p.m. contest.

-- Kyle Taljan's goal with 2:47 left lifted Oberlin College to a 1-1 tie with Babson College in men's soccer on Saturday afternoon.
The first-year player from North Ridgeville helped turn around a lethargic first half performance by the Yeomen. Despite several good chances in both overtime periods, Oberlin was unable to get over the top.
"We gave up a soft goal in the first half," Head Coach Blake New said. "That woke us up a bit the rest of the game. It was a pretty physical contest, but we answered the challenge. No one is happy with a draw, but we'll take it and move forward."
Babson's goal was scored at the 21:03 mark of the first half by junior Derek Losi. Oberlin managed nine shots on the afternoon, while goalkeeper Clayton Combe made a save for the Yeomen.
Oberlin, now 0-0-1 on the season, takes on Defiance College tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.
