March 22 – The Oberlin College men’s lacrosse team led most of the way, but could not hang on for the victory as they fell to the University of the South (aka Sewanee), 17-15, in their season-opening game on Saturday afternoon.
Alex Jacobs, Nick Sherman and Jesse Kane led the Oberlin attack with three goals apiece. Oberlin also got a strong contribution from its first and second-year players as they accounted for 11 of the team’s 15 goals on the afternoon. Scoring goals in their respective collegiate debuts were rookies Rob Bond, Owen Campbell, Nick Bermeo and Kif Leswing.
The Yeomen (0-1) led 7-5 at the intermission, but the Tigers fought back to tie things at 12 going into the fourth quarter. The final period was back-and-forth in terms of goal scoring, but Sewanee (3-3) took a 16-15 lead with three minutes left in the game and held on for the win.
The Yeomen really out-played the Tigers in most phases of the game as they scooped up 57 groundballs compared to the Tigers’ 36. OC also won 19 of 34 faceoffs (.558 percent) and out-shot Sewanee 42 to 40.
Senior Drew Zambelli manned the cage the entire 60 minutes – racking up 15 saves along the way.
Oberlin will spend the remainder of the week training in Hilton Head, S.C. before taking on Vassar College on March 30 at 2 p.m.
