Bishops Barrage of Goals Does in Men’s Lacrosse

Final Stats

April 2 - A cool crisp sunny Wednesday afternoon seemed to be the perfect way to begin North Coast Athletic Conference play for Oberlin men’s lacrosse.  Unfortunately, it was an Ohio Wesleyan (4-4, 1-0 NCAC) team whom stepped onto the grass of Dill Field, intent on fixing their deceiving 3-4 record thus far as they had losses to three of the nation’s top four teams - taking it out on Oberlin 26-6 on Wednesday evening.

Oberlin (0-3, 0-1 NCAC), on the other hand, was playing in their first home game of the season after miserable winter weather forced the team to cancel their first two.  The difference between the two teams was apparent as the Bishops onslaught of the Oberlin cage resulted in the win.

Albeit the victory seems lopsided, it does not tell the whole story of the game.  Senior goalkeeper Drew Zambelli was a stone fox in goal, racking up an astonishing 27 of 30 saves for Oberlin who had to deal with 67 shots on the day.

The Yeomen were lead in scoring by Nick “Hyphy” Thypin-Berneo as he had two goals on the day.

The first quarter started off quickly as Oberlin had a serious run of form that was focused on keeping contact with the OWU offense.  A change of luck here or there would have made the contest a much tighter affair, but such was not the case for OC as the Bishops swarmed in to take the lead 7-2 as the first 15 minutes wound down.

In a near repeat of the first quarter, Oberlin, still in good spirits and fighting hard could not keep pace with the hare that is Ohio Wesleyan lacrosse.  Although Zambelli, who for sure was Oberlin’s match MVP, kept an extraordinary number of shots from entering the net as the half ended 13-4 in favor of the Bishops.

The second half of play brought much of the same to the game.  Hardnosed efforts throughout the Yeomen team attempted to bring Oberlin back into the contest, but the Bishops would not take their foot off the pedal, doubling their score in the first half to end the game 26-6.

Next up for the Yeomen is The College of Mt. St. Joseph on Saturday at 2 p.m.
