Nick Sherman (Fr.) and Bryan
Harfenist (Sr.) celebrate after connecting for a score today against Wooster |
-- Oberlin's men's lacrosse team kicked off its 2007 home slate this afternoon by hosting rival The College of Wooster. Although five different Yeomen scored goals, the visiting Fighting Scots left Dill Field with a 18-5 North Coast Athletic Conference victory. With the loss, Oberlin slipped to 0-4 overall and 0-3 in NCAC play, while Wooster jumped to 4-1 (1-0 NCAC).
Wooster got its offense rolling quickly today, jumping out to a 3-0 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the first quarter. First-year Nick Sherman got the Yeomen on the board soon after off an assist from senior quad-captain Bryan Harfenist. The Scots netted three more goals before the end of the period, though, to take a 6-1 lead.
The second quarter was much of the same story as the first, as Wooster again outscored the Yeomen 6-1 to take a 12-2 lead into the intermission.
Oberlin had a solid third period, scoring two goals, including a man-down goal by sophomore
Derry Kiernan. In the fourth quarter, first-year Eric Strand notched his team-leading eighth goal of the year. In the end, Wooster left Oberlin with a 18-5 win, outshooting the Yeomen 53-19 and boasting a 55-38 advantage in ground balls. Oberlin managed to convert 18 of 20 clear chances and was 1-2 in extra-man opportunities.
The Yeomen were led offensively today by Harfenist and first-year Alex Jacobs, who both tallied a goal and assist. Sophomore quad-captain Jesse Kane also scooped up eight ground balls and sophomore Erik Kojola had a very strong game on the defensive side of the ball.
Wooster was led by Dan MacVarish, who racked up a game-high four goals.
Oberlin will next be in action at Guilford College on March 25th (1:00 p.m.).
