Ian Mark (Sr.)
Yeomen Edged by Shenandoah (Va.), 10-12

March 10, 2007 -- Despite outscoring host Shenandoah University (Va.) 9-6 in the last three periods of play, the Oberlin men's lacrosse team was edged by the Hornets, 10-12. After the defeat, the Yeomen fall to 0-2 on the year, while Shenandoah remains unbeaten at 2-0.

The Hornets jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead after the first quarter, and then took a 10-4 into the intermission. In the second half, Head Coach Kevin Walz's Yeomen controlled the tempo of the game, outscoring Shenandoah 3-1 in both quarters.

First-year Alex Jacobs led Oberlin today by netting three goals on six shots. Senior co-captains Ian Mark and Bryan Harfenist and first-year Erik Strand scored two goals apiece. Strand and classmate Nick Sherman also both each had an assist.

Shenandoah held the advantage in both shots (39-35) and ground balls (46-38), while the Yeomen were successful on 21 of their 26 clear attempts. Junior goalkeeper Drew Zambelli had 15 saves for Oberlin, while three different Hornets tallied three goals apiece.

"It was pretty much a game where we came out flat and had too much of a deficit to come back from," Walz said. "We played great in the second half and just need to put four solid quarters together."

Oberlin's next game will be on Saturday, March 17, for a North Coast Athletic Conference contest at Wittenberg University. The contest against the Tigers is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
