-- The North Coast Athletic Conference released its 2006 All-Conference team today. Midfielder Will Jaffee and defenseman Max Braun were both named as honorable mention selections.
Jaffee has been named to the NCAC All-Conference team for the past four years. This season Jaffee scored 18 goals and recorded four assists for the Yeomen. Max Braun made the All-Conference team for the past three years, and led the Yeomen with 64 ground balls this season.
-- The Oberlin College men's lacrosse was defeated by the Kenyon Lords 21-4 in NCAC action Wednesday afternoon.
The Lords jumped out to an early lead and didn't allow the Yeomen to get close.
Offensively, Jesse Kane put the Yeomen on the board on a goal from Bryan Harfenist. Will Jaffee recorded his 18th goal of the season with an assist from David Schlussman. Jono Sanders and Ian Dias also scored one goal apiece in the final contest of the year.
"Shots wise we're right where we need to be," Head Coach Kevin Walz said after the game. "We just need to finish shots, something that we're going to work on in the off-season." He went on to say, "I'd like to thank the seniors as well as Jono Sanders, who is leaving after this year. They've been a huge part of this team."
The Yeomen finish the 2006 season with a 4-10 record overall, 0-5 in the NCAC.
April 26, 2006 -- The Oberlin College Men’s lacrosse team fell to the College of Wooster this afternoon by a final score of 19-2.
The Yeomen struggled from the outset as the College of Wooster used its speed to get past Oberlin’s defense and fill up the net. The Scots, despite only a 6-5 record going into the contest, had held a lead in the fourth quarter of every one of their games.
“They just outplayed us today,” head coach Kevin Walz said. We looked a step slow against a really athletic team and they eventually ran us into the ground. It was a tough match-up for us.”
The Yeomen will host conference foe Kenyon College on Thursday, May 3rd at 4:30 p.m.
-- The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team was hoping to make it four wins in a row, but were unable to battle back against the Wittenberg Tigers, losing by a score of 16-6.
Junior Ian Dias put Oberlin on the board first off of an Andrew Crosby assist. Wittenberg came back to score four unanswered goals before senior Will Jaffe made it 4-2 for the Yeomen. Dias netted another goal before the half to cut the deficit to 9-3.
The game began to slip away from the Yeomen in the third quarter, with Wittenberg going on a 3-1 run to start the half.
The Yeomen racked up 38 ground balls, and senior goalkeeper Jared Pickard had 12 saves for Oberlin, but the team was not able to stop a strong Wittenberg offense, which put 36 shots on goal in four quarters of play.
Dias and Jaffee each ended the day with a pair of goals for the Yeomen, and Crosby added two assists, and five ground balls.
“This was a sloppy game, and I hope we can put it behind us,” Head Coach Kevin Walz said.
Oberlin is now 4-9 on the season and 0-4 in conference. The Yeomen return to NCAC action on Wednesday, April 26th, when they travel to the College of Wooster. Game time is set for 4:30 PM.

-- Oberlin College Men’s Lacrosse extended their winning streak to three games this Wednesday afternoon, defeating Seton Hill University on Dill Field by a score of 19-5.
The Yeomen set the pace early, jumping out to 7-1 lead in the first period. Junior midfielder Ben Purdon put Oberlin on the board off of a Bryan Harfenist assist. The Yeomen netted two more before the Griffins could penetrate the stingy Yeomen defense. Oberlin retaliated with five unanswered goals, and headed into the half with an 11-3 lead.
Oberlin's offensive attack continued through the second half, as the Yeomen outscored Seton Hill 8-2 to close out the game.
Harfenist led the offense with four goals and three assists. Senior Will Jaffee and junior Ian Dias also scored four apiece, while senior David Schlussman chipped in with three. Senior goalkeeper Jared Pickard got the win, facing 30 shots in three quarters and recording 16 saves.
“This was an excellent all-around performance,” Head Coach Kevin Walz said. “We learned an important lesson earlier this year by giving up too many shots, and it’s really gotten better the past few games.”
The Yeomen look to extend their streak to four on Saturday when they host conference rival Wittenberg University. The teams take the field at 2:00 p.m.

April 15, 2006 --- David Schlussman and Bryan Harfenist each registered four goals and the Yeomen defense smothered Shenandoah as Oberlin men’s lacrosse defeated the Hornets, 19-6, Saturday afternoon at Dill Field. Eight different players found the back of the net for Oberlin, and the Yeomen defense held a 65-30 ground ball advantage.
Senior Andrew Crosby struck first for the Yeomen on an unassisted goal at 14:37. Just under thirty seconds later, first-year Jesse Kane put up his first shot of the day. Shenandoah answered back with one of their own, Oberlin closed out the first half on a 3-1 run sparked by another Kane goal. Schlussman got the first goal of the second period off of a Max Braun assist. The next goal in the game would not come until there were under five minutes left in the first half when Ian Dias struck first on an unassisted goal and then off of a Schlussman pass. Four more Yeomen scored before the period ended, giving Oberlin a 12-3 lead at halftime.
The Yeomen started the second half hot offensively as Harfenist and Schlussman scored twice in the half. The Hornets put up three in the third period but crumbled to the Yeomen defense in the fourth and were unable to add to their efforts.
“Shenandoah tried to make a run in the third period, but we stuck with them,” Head Coach Kevin Walz said. “We stuck together, played hard for sixty minutes and finished out the game stronger than we’ve done all year. I’m really proud of the way that we played out there.”
Kane ended the day with a hat trick. Ian Mark, Dias and Ben Purdon each scored twice for the Yeomen. Crosby and Marcus Robinson each added a goal in the victory.
The Yeomen will look to continue their winning ways this Wednesday, April 19, against Seton Hill. The first draw will be at 4:30 p.m.

--- Junior attack Bryan Harfenist put up a single-game high three goals to lead the Oberlin men's lacrosse team to an 8-5 victory against Medaille College.
Senior Will Jaffee and junior Ian Dias were the Yeomen’s other multiple-goal scorers with two tallies each. Senior David Schlussman added a goal in the victory. Senior Andrew Crosby and Schlussman were each credited with two assists, while first-year Jesse Kane had one.
"Medaille is a much improved team and was able to stick with us for most of the game,” Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "I was proud of how we responded after they tied it up, and once we got the lead we never had to look back."
The Yeomen return home for a non-conference matchup with Shenandoah on April 15 at 1:00 p.m.

--- The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team never recovered from an 11-0 deficit at the half, as the Keuka College Warriors defeated the Yeomen 17-4 on Saturday afternoon.
Oberlin didn't score a goal until the 5:09 mark of the third period. Senior midfielder David Schlussman found the back of the net to put the Yeomen on the board. Less than a minute later, Andrew Crosby found Will Jaffee for the team's second goal. Bryan Harfenist finished out the period with an unassisted shot. With 56 seconds left in the game, Jaffee hit his second goal of the game. He leads the team this season with 10 goals.
"This was the worst we've played all season," Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "We didn't stick to our game plan, and we got beat really bad. We're going to have to work on a lot of things between now and Wednesday."
The team falls to 1-8 overall and 0-2 in the NCAC. Oberlin takes on Medaille on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.

April 5, 2006 --- Oberlin College men's lacrosse jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, but Denison University fought back on their home field to post an 11-4 victory on Wednesday night.
Junior attack Bryan Harfenist scored the game's first two goals. His first went unassisted, and the second was from senior Andrew Crosby. This gave the Yeomen a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter, but the team headed into the half down 5-2.
Will Jaffee and Ian Dias each added a goal in the second half. Despite Oberlin goalkeeper Jared Pickard's 17 saves on the night, Denison capitalized on all of its opportunities.
"We played really well tonight," Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "It was a very physical game with a lot of ground balls, and I'm really pleased with out effort. This is the best we've ever played Denison since I've been here."
The Yeomen are now 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the NCAC. The team hosts Keuka College on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.

April 2, 2006 --- First-year Jesse Kane scored an unassisted goal 2:21 seconds into the second overtime as as the Yeomen defeated Vassar College, 6-5, in men's lacrosse action Sunday afternoon at Prentiss Field.
Vassar scored the first goal of the game at 5:04 in the first quarter. Senior midfielder Andrew Crosby tied the score at one at 3:34. The Yeomen took the lead in the second quarter off of a Bryan Harfenist goal at the 6:51 mark.
In the second half, the Brewers were first to strike again, evening the score at two. Oberlin scored the game's next two goals, building a 4-2 lead. Harfenist found the back of the net once again, only ten seconds after Vassar tied the game at two. Senior midfielder Will Jaffee then gave the Yeomen another goal at 7:40 in the third quarter. Vassar pulled within one with less than four minutes to play in the third, but Oberlin closed out the period, off of an unassisted goal at 1:30 by junior Ian Dias to put Oberlin ahead 5-3 heading into the fourth.
Vassar was able to get two fourth quarter goals to force overtime. Both teams went scoreless in the first overtime. In the second overtime, Kane found a space on the lower left side of the Brewers goal and snuck in past their goalkeeper for the win.
"We worked really hard and played a great game," Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "Our alumni that came out to support us today was fantastic. It was a total team effort to get this win."
Oberlin senior goalie Jared Pickard put up major numbers in the net, facing 36 Vassar shots and coming up with 20 saves.
Vassar led in ground balls, 55 to 40, while Oberlin was more successful in face-offs and clears, connecting on 10 of 16 face-offs and 20 of 23 clears. Vassar went 20 of 29 on clears. In extra man opportunities, Oberlin was 0-4, Vassar went 0-6.
The team will play again on Wednesday when they face Denison in a conference match. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.

March 25, 2006 --- The Oberlin men’s lacrosse team was defeated by the Guilford College Quakers 12-4 on Saturday afternoon.
The Yeomen had a rough first half, giving up seven goals and only scoring one of their own. The Quakers took 43 shots on goal to Oberlin's 35.
Senior Will Jaffee led in scoring for the Yeomen. The midfielder had two goals in the effort. Junior Bryan Harfenist added a goal off of an Ian Mark assist, and junior Ben Purdon scored off of a Jesse Kane assist.
"We played a horrendous first half," Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "We had a much better second half, but we can't give up that many goals in any game."
Oberlin falls to 0-5 on the season. The team will take on Vassar College on
April 2 at 12:00 p.m.

March 22, 2006 --- The Oberlin men’s lacrosse team lost to three time defending conference champion Ohio Wesleyan, 13-1, on Wednesday afternoon at Dill Field. The Yeomen are now 0-4 overall and 0-2 in the league, while the Bishops improved to 4-3 and 1-0.
Junior Ian Dias scored the only goal for the Yeomen off of an assist from sophomore Chris Sanders. Senior goalkeeper Jared Pickard made 11 saves in the loss.
Ohio Wesleyan outshot Oberlin 48-18 and racked up 46 ground balls to Oberlin’s 35. Jarred Law led the Bishops with five goals and Nick Gallagher chipped in three.
“It was an extremely strong defensive effort,” Head Coach Kevin Walz said. “We played hard on both ends of the field, but we didn’t get the offensive opportunities that we were looking for. Because of the type of team that Ohio Wesleyan is, I’m happy that we held them to only 13.”
The Yeomen head off to spring break this weekend. They take on Guilford College on March 25 at 1:00 p.m.

March 15, 2006 --- The Oberlin men's lacrosse team faced Washington & Jefferson on Wednesday afternoon at Alexandre Stadium. The Presidents defeated the Yeomen 12-5.
The Presidents took a quick lead by finding the back of the net only two minutes into the match. Oberlin tied the game less than a minute later on a goal from junior midfielder Ian Dias, assisted by first-year Jesse Kane. However, Washington & Jefferson struck back with three quick goals to take a 4-1 advantage at the end of the first quarter. Kane struck again in the second quarter with a goal of his own, but the Yeomen headed into halftime down 6-3.
The Presidents scored twice in the first eight minutes of the second half for an 8-3 edge, but senior midfielder Will Jaffee and junior attacker Bryan Harfenist netted a pair of goals 52 seconds apart to bring the Yeomen to within three, 8-5. This would prove to be the final scoring opportunity for Oberlin.
"It was a back and forth game, and we were with them all the way," Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "We had some silly mental errors in the fourth, but the final score really doesn't reflect the way we played tonight."
Oberlin held a 35-33 edge in shots, but could only convert 1-of-10 extra-man opportunities. The Yeomen are now 0-2 on the season.
Oberlin will take on NCAC rival Wittenberg University on March 18 in Springfield, Ohio. The match is set for 2:00 p.m.
March 8, 2006 --- The Oberlin College men's lacrosse team fell to Wheeling Jesuit University 14-3 on Wednesday afternoon.
The Yeomen started off strong, putting up the first goal of the game. It came off a Bryan Harfenist shot, assisted by Andrew Crosby. The quarter would end with Oberlin down 3-1. In the second quarter, the momentum shifted away from the Yeomen, as the Cardinals built a 9-1 advantage.
Oberlin fought back in the fourth with a pair of goals, one from Ian Dias and one from Will Jaffee.
"We played a great first quarter, but we played really soft in the second," Head Coach Kevin Walz said. "Wheeling is a really good team with four games under their belt. For the first game in, I'm happy with the way we played."
The Yeomen will take on Washington and Jefferson next Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
