January 5 – Mike Loll matched a career-high with 27 points as Oberlin College fell to Wittenberg University 82-66 in a hard-fought North Coast Athletic Conference meeting on Saturday afternoon.
Loll (Davison, Mich./Davison HS) finished 10-of-19 from the floor – including a 3-of-7 effort from beyond the arc, to go along with a team-high six rebounds.
Jordan Beard (Oberlin, Ohio/Oberlin) also added to the Yeomen offensive attack with 18 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Ryan Magiera (Louisville, Colo./Monarch) completed the Yeomen’s double-digit scorers with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting.
“I am proud of the way our guys played today,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco said. “The first 30 minutes was the best stretch of basketball we have played all year. I hope to build off of the positives we had today as we continue to go forward.
A Magiera three-ball got the Yeomen within three, 57-54, with just under 10 minutes to play, but the Tigers responded with a 13-to-5 run over the next seven minutes to end the Oberlin threat.
OC (2-9, 1-2 NCAC) also couldn’t overcome a large discrepancy at the free-throw line as the Tigers cashed in on 15 of their 24 charity tosses, while the Yeomen went to the line just seven times – making six. The Tigers (7-5, 3-0 NCAC) also benefited from 42 points in points in the paint and 17 points off of second-chance opportunities.
The Yeomen came out of the locker room scorching hot – shooting 50 percent (12-of-24) in the first half, including a 5-of-11 (45.5 percent) effort from 3-point land as they trailed 36-35 at the break.
Oberlin converted on 47.2 percent (25-of-53) of shots on the afternoon, while the Tigers connected on 53.6 percent (30-of-56).
Gregg Hill paced the Tigers with 24 points while Brandan Barabino contributed 15 of his own.
Oberlin returns home on Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a conference battle with Denison. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
