Chiu Nets a Season High in Loss to Kenyon

Final Stats

February 13 – Despite a career-high 15 points from first-year Gian Chiu, the Oberlin College men’s basketball team fell to Kenyon College, 78-56, on Wednesday night at Philips Gym.

Chiu finished 5-of-8 from the floor and 5-of-6 at the line in just 22 minutes of action. Junior Mike Loll added 15 of his own on 4-of-9 shooting and a perfect 6-of-6 effort at the charity stripe.

“Gian really stepped it up inside tonight against two players who will probably be all-conference at the end of the year,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco said. “As a team we just need to continue to get better and learn from our mistakes.”

Oberlin (4-18, 3-10 NCAC) got off to slow start offensively as they trailed 13-3 nine minutes into the game. The Yeomen fought back with an 18-3 run, that featured Chase Palmer’s first-career bucket in Philips Gym, to claim a 21-20 edge with three minutes left in the opening stanza, but Kenyon (10-12, 8-5 NCAC) eventually took a 25-23 advantage into the locker room.

Both offenses didn’t exactly light the nets on fire in the first half as each team checked in at 38.5 percent. However, it was a different story for the Lords in the second half as they shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) over the final 20 minutes.

OC held a 33-30 lead four minutes in the final frame, but Kenyon ripped off a 24-2 run over the next eight minutes and never looked back.

Oberlin will return to action on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. EST when it travels Crawfordsville, Ind. to battle the Little Giants of Wabash.
