January 23 – Ryan Magiera scored a game-high 16 points and local product Jordan Beard added 15 of his own, but it wasn’t enough as the Oberlin College men’s basketball team fell to Kenyon, 70-60, at the Tomsich Arena on Wednesday night.
Magiera, who kept the Yeomen close with some key shots in the second half, finished 7-of-13 from the floor, while Beard checked in with a solid 6-of-13 effort on the night.
“It was a tale off two halves for us tonight,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco said. “We started off great, but came out of the locker room in the second half a little slow. However, I am proud of the way we got after it on the glass, and I feel we gained some confidence from this game going into the back-half of our schedule.”
Oberlin (3-13, 2-5 NCAC) shot 55.2 percent (16-of-29) in the first half as it held a 37-28 lead at the break. The Yeomen trailed 24-23 with just under five minutes left in the half, but used a 13-5 run – which featured a combined 11 points from Magiera and Beard – to closeout the half.
The Lords (7-9, 5-2 NCAC) connected on just 34.5 percent (10-of-29) of their shots in the first 20 minutes, but the second session was a different story as they converted 54.5 percent (12-of-22) of their attempts in the final frame.
Kenyon started the second half on a 16-0 run over the first five minutes and fought-off multiple OC comeback threats the rest of the way. Magiera converted a 3-point play to get the Yeomen within seven, 59-52, with just over two minutes to play, but key free-throw shooting by the Lords down the stretch allowed them to hang on for the win.
KC also benefited from a large discrepancy at the free-throw line – making 31 trips to the stripe on the night – cashing in on 21 of them (64.5 percent), while Oberlin took just five charity tosses – converting all five.
Oberlin will continue its road swing on Saturday, January 26, at Hiram College. Tip-off is set for 3:00 p.m. |
