NCAC Tournament Bracket
February 23 – An outstanding second-half effort propelled the Oberlin College men’s basketball team to a thrilling 76-73 come-from-behind victory in the regular-season finale for both teams on Saturday afternoon at Philips Gym.
With the win combined with Wabash’s 86-75 victory over Denison, Oberlin claimed its first post-season tournament berth since the 2000-01 season.
“Everyone played their role very well today,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco Said. “We fought hard and won the hustle stats, which made the difference in this game.”
Mike Loll led the Yeomen offensive attack with 19 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Fellow junior Omari Hall added 17 points – dialing in on 5-of-8 triple-tries. First-year Ryan Magiera nearly recorded his second-straight double-double with 12 points and nine boards.
The Yeomen (5-20, 4-12 NCAC) claimed their first lead of the game, 60-58, at the 6:46 mark on a wheeling jumper in the lane by Loll, which capped off a 21-9 run that also featured a 4-point play by Loll.
Hiram (8-17, 5-11 NCAC) didn’t go away quietly as they reclaimed a 70-68 lead with 60 seconds left to play. On the ensuing possession, Hall responded with one of his five triples, while first-year Gian Chiu and senior Matt Godwin followed with five free throws in the final seconds to help secure the victory for OC.
Oberlin trailed 35-24 at the break after a poor shooting half (28 percent/9-of-32), but it was a different story for the Yeomen in the final 20 minutes.
Oberlin shot 54.5 percent (18-of-33) in the second session – including 6-of-11 from long range – and finished at 41.5 percent (27-of-65) for the game.
The Yeomen cashed in 25 points off of 18 Terrier turnovers and also outscored Hiram 16-10 on second-chance opportunities. The Oberlin bench bunch also came up big today with 32 points.
The newest Yeoman, Chase Palmer, also brought great intensity on both ends of the court as he finished with eight boards to go along with six points.
Oberlin will now draw No. 1-seeded Wooster on Tuesday night in the opening round of the NCAC Tournament. Tip-off is slated for 7:30 p.m. |
