Sharp Shooting Plagues Yeomen in Loss to Hiram

Final Stats

January 26 – Four Yeomen scored in double-figures, but sharp shooting by Hiram lifted the Terries to a 93-66 victory over Oberlin in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

Junior Mike Loll led the Yeomen with 15 points on 6-of-10 shooting. NCAC Newcomer of the Year candidate, Ryan Magiera added 11 points to go along with a game-high seven rebounds. Senior Jordan Beard and first-year James Tompsett added 10 points a piece.

“We need to do a better job defensively,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco said. “We also need to improve on getting the guys the ball in a position to succeed on the offensive end.”

Tompsett converted a fast-break opportunity to give the Yeomen an early 17-16 edge eight minutes into the game, but the Terriers followed with a 16-5 over the next five minutes to build a 43-32 half-time advantage.

Hiram (7-10, 4-4 NCAC) didn’t let up in the second half as they came out of the locker room making seven-consecutive shots to increase its lead. A Beard layup got Oberlin (3-14, 2-6 NCAC) within 15, 60-45, with just under 12 minutes to play, but OC could not close the gap any further.

The Terriers buried 36-of-69 shots on the afternoon for a 52.2 percent success rate – including a staggering 47.4 percent (9-of-19) clip from long range. Hiram also cashed in on 12-of-13 attempts at the line.

Oberlin finished 44.1 percent (26-of-59) from the floor and made 11-of-14 free throws – all coming in the second half. Hiram controlled the glass with 41 boards, compared to just 28 for Oberlin. The Terriers also deposited 36 points in the paint, while Oberlin ended with 22 points in the colored area.

Hiram also had four players in double-digits with Mike Stanley leading the way with a game-high 20 points.

The Yeomen will return home on Wednesday, Jan. 30, as they welcome Ohio Wesleyan to town for a 7:30 p.m. showdown.
