January 9 – Jordan Beard and Mike Loll combined for 38 points to lead the Oberlin College men’s basketball team to a 75-70 victory over Denison University on Wednesday night.
Beard, a 5-foot-11 senior, dropped in 19 points as he was 6-of-12 from the field – including three 3-pointers, while Loll finished 8-of-18 from the floor to match Beard with 19 of his own to go along with a team-high six rebounds.
“We had a very balanced offensive attack,” head coach Isaiah Cavaco said. “We had five guys with eight or more points; with different guys stepping up in key situations during the game.”
Oberlin (3-9, 2-2 NCAC) led by as many as 14 with just over 10 minutes to play, but the Big Red (0-13, 0-4 NCAC) got within three, 73-70, with under a minute left on the clock. Denison had three fouls to give before it finally sent Beard to the line – who calmly went on to sink both charity tosses to secure the win for OC.
The first 20 minutes were played very closely as the game was tied at 20 at the 6:04 mark, before Oberlin scored 16 of the frame’s final to 24 points to hold a 36-28 advantage at the break.
The Yeomen had another strong shooting performance as they connected on 49.2-percent (29-of-59) of their shots. On the defensive-end, Oberlin also created 14 turnovers – translating into 15 points.
Omari Hall and Ryan Magiera also contributed to the Yeomen offensive potency by checking in with 10 and nine points respectively.
The Big Red had five players finish in double-figures with Pat Sullivan leading the way with 17 points.
The next game for Oberlin will be a homecoming for coach Cavaco as he will take the Yeomen on the road to due battle with the Yale Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Cavaco, who was a four-year letter winner for Yale from 1998-2001, graduated from the prestigious institution with bachelor’s degree in economics. The Yeomen and Bulldogs last met up on the hardwood 101 years ago during the 1906-07 season with Yale coming out on top 34-27. |
